Interesting science read- migrating cells between mama and baby, and long term health implications

A scientist friend of mine who is also pregnant sent me a really interesting article about some new research that just came out of one of our local cancer research centers. It's about how some of your cells migrate into your baby and stay there after the baby is born, and also how some of your baby's cells migrate into your body and stay there after the baby leaves. Apparently these cells have all kinds of interesting repercussions, some positive and some negative, for either increasing or decreasing your risk for certain diseases, including cancer and diabetes.
It's a bit heady but I find this stuff so interesting!

  • I personally think this is one of the reasons that autoimmune diseases show up in our bodies.  The mom's cells in the child, the child's cells in the mom.  Makes sense tht the immune system might get confused as they "attack" foreign cells and confuse the host cells.
I couldn't believe how much information they could gather from my child from my blood sample.

  • @zoegirlTX that does sound bizarre. How could they share no DNA? Crazy! @discohiker that seems like a plausible theory to me. There are definitely positive and negative implications for these cellular relationships. I'm excited about the possibility of fetal cells as a way to prevent breast cancer- it sounds like the research is in early stages but it still sounds promising.
