Need road trip advice...

Long story short, an airline friend of ours hooked us up with stand-by tickets to fly to an out of town wedding tomorrow. The Sunday return flight is not looking so good, so now we're thinking about driving the 7.5 hours to the wedding.  Should we (a) break up the drive and sleep somewhere tonight and finish the drive tomorrow, or (b) leave tomorrow at 5:30 a.m. and complete the drive in one shot?

I'm hesitant about doing it one shot...but am also nervous about leaving tonight as we did not prepare for this at all.  Also, I have yet to spend more than 30 minutes in my car since I've pregnant. Any advice about which route would be easier on me and/or any general advice about taking long road trip while pregnant?

Are you driving or riding? If you're the passenger, do you need to stay awake to keep the driver alert? I have a lot of trouble staying up late particularly now.

I would probably just get up early and drive there tomorrow. But I would add into the drive at least 2 half hour or longer stops. And bring a large water bottle and refill it at the stops. Then if your bladder needs more stops, that's probably good for you too. When you stop, get out and go for a short walk, plus bathroom, and a little stretching. It won't be totally comfortable but you'll survive it.

I would say do it all at once, but it depends on how comfortable you are with car travel, how many pregnancy related issues you are currently having. I would just recommend bringing whatever you think youll need, and lots of it (like Tums.. we drove 1.5 hours up to OKC and back last night to watch a ball game.. I didn't pack Tums.. Misery ensued).

Do it at once with breaks. You'll be happy it's over when you are home.

I have a 26hr trip at 27 and 32 weeks and we are taking a couple of days but with breaks. 7.5hr sounds fun in comparison!

  • Thanks for the advice, ladies.  Definitely a lot to consider at 27 weeks pregnant. But you've definitely put my mind at ease; the long drive won't be as bad as I think.  The hubby will do most, if not all, of the driving. I'm free to eat, sleep, complain, etc...during the ride.  I'm just trying to focus on the positives: I can bring my Snoogle with me and I can watch as much girly tv on the iPad as I want.  Thanks again for the input!
  • I would vote to break it up on the way there, but a straight shot on the way home. Really, I would drive the whole way today, but that is because I wouldn't want to drive at all before attending a wedding. Either way you do it, plan for stops. I would do a nice one in the middle for some food at someplace nice - so you can walk a bit, relax, get something good to eat and have access to a nicer bathroom. I like road trips and weddings, so have a good time!

  • Last week I just did a 6 hour car trip each way within a 30 hour period (attending a funeral out of state) as both driver and passenger and it was rough. I used to be able to do 8 hr trips alone (yay caffeine!!!!) and now I find it very difficult to stay awake (particularly night time driving) and my back gets achey way more easily. And, as previous posters have already said, stay hydrated and frequently stretch/extend your legs or walk around. Oh, and pack a lot of snacks!
