Camden's Dr. Visit *Update*

I mentioned in the "Randoms" thread that Camden was going to see the doctor because of high fevers and some twitching/jerking he was doing in his sleep. We got there and as soon as the doctor asked about a rash, one literally broke out on his body.  No spots when we walked in and full of spots when we left.  Turns out he has the hand/foot/mouth viral infection!  He has several spots at the back of his mouth which could be the cause of crankiness and his lack of appetite.

The pediatrician also ordered a few tests to rule out anything major was causing the shaking/jerking.  He seems to think it was just chills and/or him being uncomfortable from the infection and trying to readjust, but to be on the safe side he ran some test.  LO had blood drawn and a catheter to extract urine.  It was painful to watch.  I'm now anxiously awaiting the results.  I should know something this afternoon.  I will update when we hear back.

UPDATE: Doctor called back and said all of the tests looked normal.  He does have a slight elevation in white blood cells in his urine that could mean a UTI or bladder infection but could also be from irritation from the catheter.  He is going to watch the cultures for 2 days and let us know if anything develops from that.
Camden's fever finally broke, and he is playing away.  He looks much better but still has trouble eating due to the throat blisters. Thanks everyone for your well wishes.

  • Poor guy.  Hope he's feeling better soon and the twitching is just what the doctor says at this point - being uncomfortable.

  • @jennlin and other mom's who have dealt with this, how was the rash with your LO?  Camden's rash appeared today on his legs, stomach, hands, and feet.  It was light and has pretty much gone away already.  I thought these rashes spread for awhile. Do they go away and reappear?  I know his throat is pretty bad so maybe his is mostly there.

@tashad18‌ our case might not be a good example because while my daughter and my nephew got textbook cases of HFM (fever, followed by blisters on hands, feet, mouth), my baby got what the pedi said was atypical case of HFM. He had fever, followed by dark red spots that looked like chicken pox on his hands, feet, mouth, plus arms, legs, and a few spots on his back. All dark red spots. It only came once, not continuous the way chicken pox would be. Other than fever, it did not affect temperament too much of any of the three kids.

My husband on the other hand got a very high fever and has been down for the count since late Saturday. He went to work on Monday and started developing painful, debilitating blisters on his hands and feet. He has been bed ridden since (men). He is on medication that suppresses his immune system, which is likely why he got it.

Hope your little cam doesn't suffer too much!

  • Glad you got it figured out and he's feeling better!

Awww poor little guy!! I hope he feels better ASAP! I am glad you for some answers!! We had HFM about 3 weeks ago. Luckily it was a quick run. Hope yours is too! ETA: To answer you other question-- our case was a little different too. He never got any sores in his mouth. His were mainly on his buttocks, lower belly, groin and a few on his hands and feet. Most of the blisters were on his lower back.
Camden's body rash seems mild compared to pictures and what the doctor said it could get to.  Unfortunately, the throat rash is awful.  He whimpers while eating and is eating less. When DS1 was about a year old he got a similar rash and it was strep that had gotten into his blood stream! I'm just relieved that it wasn't that.
