For those who were induced...

How on earth did you get any rest the night before (or could you even)? I have to be at the hospital at 5am tomorrow and I am too excited and anxious to even consider sleep! I figure I can nap in the early stages tomorrow but I don't see sleep happening tonight. Sorry this is not really a meaningful post...it's like half a question and half nervous babble. Haha

Re: For those who were induced...

  • If I don't have this baby by Monday I will be induced Tuesday or Wednesday and I'm pretty sure I won't be sleeping the night before, I'm barely sleeping now!!

I'm being induced Sunday and I'm wondering the same thing. On one hand, Sunday is so close but on the other hand, it feels like forever. I hope we can get some sleep, my midwife said it isn't unusual to have an induction last 24 hours. We will need our rest!!
  • I totally did not sleep at all when I was induced with DS1. They had me check in at 9pm and I had contractions all night that weren't bad but were enough to keep me up. I was way too anxious and nervous and excited!

  • Fwiw, I went into labor on my own with DD but early labor lasted through half of one night and all of the next before active labor started and I got very little if any sleep either night and I made it :). I fell asleep when I got my epi.

Even though I got no sleep, I was so pumped the next day. My adrenaline was through the roof. DS was born late afternoon and I still couldn't sleep from the high I felt from giving birth. I did not sleep for 2 days straight. It all came crashing down that next day, haha.

Ha. I was actually already in the hospital the night before my induction, for Cytotec and monitoring, and I didn't sleep worth a damn. They even gave me Stadol to help relax me, but all it did was make me sweat and hallucinate. And forget sleeping when you have an automatic blood pressure cuff squeezing the heck out of your arm every freaking fifteen minutes.

OMG about the BP cuff! Those things hurrrrt, there's no way anyone in their right mind could sleep through that going off every 15 mins.

  • I'm being induced on Tuesday, and I figured I'd take something to help me sleep. I haven't been sleeping much as is, and I know I'll be a nervous wreck. I'm also worried that there won't be any beds available, and I'll end up waiting the next day, and probably with my luck beds still won't be available!

  • I didn't sleep at all! I got amazing sleep once the pain meds came out though. I wasn't even able to feel contractions with my epidural. So I slept a lot during labor..
  • @Bootsie327‌ thanks you as well!

I was induced and got zero sleep the day before. I was only able to sleep at the hospital after I was given epidural- I probably could of slept before getting the epidural- but everything was still so exciting and I kept watching the machines- I was too fascinated to sleep. After the 8 hrs of labor and the 3 hrs of waiting to get to our room I slept good that night in the hospital!

    Good luck to you tomorrow!!

I was induced Friday night and got no sleep until they gave me pain meds. Then I got the best sleep I've had in months! I also slept when they gave me the epidural. We were in labor for 29 hours but the worst part was not eating.

I didn't sleep the night before...got maybe 2.5 lousy hours all night, lus nightmares. But you won't get to nap during early stages (if it's anything like mine) - contractions get intense really quickly.

They started my drugs at 8:45, broke my water at 9, and he was out at 1:42 though, so it's possible you have a verydifferent experience.

    Good luck!
  • @Roufi‌ I hope I have a fast experience like that! I'll sacrifice the sleep... This labor for 24+ hour possibility when it comes to induction drags me down.
  • I don't know how I slept last night, but I'm in L&D now wide awake...got here around 8pm to start thinning my cervix and will start pitocin in the morning.

Maybe I'll sleep after delivery??? Good luck girl!

  • I'm being induced this afternoon at 38wks exactly due to high BP/possible pre-e. Good luck, everyone! I didn't sleep much last night, but that's been typical for me lately anyway.

I was induced twice and didn't get any sleep the night before. Too excited/nervous/everything else.

  • I'm in L&D now! No pitocin yet, just got my IV and got checked and all that. My BP was high but I think I'm just nervous. Good luck all!

  • 40 weeks today and I know at my app today we're going to talk about possibility of induction at 41+3. So question, did anyone have an epi-free birth with an induction? I know the pit is supposed to make the contractions way worse...opinions?

I'm being induced on Sunday but have to go in Saturday night for them to get started with prostaglandin cream. I know I won't sleep at all Friday or Saturday night. I didn't sleep at all Tuesday night after spending the afternoon in L&D and the doc booking the induction.
  • RoufiRoufi member
@Jcrewgirl85‌ I wanted to go med free, but got the epi after 30 min of agonizing contractions (not as tough as I thought I was :( ) however I started pushing immediately after because it turned out that I was at 10 cm already, and he was out 45 minutes later.

Moral of the story being, maybe I could actually have toughed out one last hour. I don't regret the epi, but in my case it would have been totally doable. However, not everyone goes in to be induced already at 4cm, having (painless) contractions every 4 or 5 minutes, and not all inductions are 5 hr affairs. Plus everyone's pain tolerance and mindset are different. I think that the only way to go is to play it by ear - you'll do what you need to do.

PS - maybe ask for a cervical check before getting the epi ;)
  • @Roufi - thanks for the advice. I'm hoping my body will figure out what it needs to do before an induction, but I'm just trying to plan ahead - as much as you can for this. Again, thanks! I'll make sure to ask for cervical checks - I have another appointment today, but as of Monday I was 2 cm. FX for progress!

As for cervical check, I just meant that in my case, had I known that I wa already at 10cm I might not have asked for the epidural.

    Good luck!
  • I was induced - had to be at the hospital at 5am too. I didnt sleep hardly at all the night before, but seriously wish I had. If I were you I would try taking like a tylenol pm or something. I wish i had! (not to scare you but i was in labor for 44, i really wished I had gotten more than 3 hours of sleep the night before my induction)

  • When I was initially induced, I was 9 cm before I had my epidural and the midwife said if she had shown up earlier, I probably wouldn't have needed one.
