October 2014 Moms

Scan showed small arms and leg bones

Seeing if anyone else had this come up? We had our level 2 ultrasound today and the arm bone measured 16w5d and the leg bone 17w4d. Her head and body measured spot on (18w1d) though. We had the CVS test done at 12 weeks due to increased nt fluid and all came back normal (yay!) but I can't help but continue to worry.

Maternal Fetal Medicine Dr. was not concerned. He chalked it up to her most likely having my short genes - I am 5' and my sisters are 4'10" and my parents are 5'2" and 5'6" - so is def likely. Height is not on my side. I am trying not to have anxiety over this but I am a huge worry wart. I was just hoping to be able to relax and enjoy this pregnancy.

Mine are always a little short too. I'm 5'2 and really petite.

DH is 6'1. Both boys so far have been fine on height (added:as they grow up but a little behind at scans)

They were both 7 pounds. I think esp if you have a small bone structure and hips it is more likely to happen.

You can be 4'11 and still wider set so I think it depends on that "some" not always

  • DS measured small (femur length) at his 20wk u/s, so we had a repeat anatomy scan at 24 weeks. They expected at the follow-up scan for him to have caught up (this is the case with most babies, and hopefully will be with yours!).

DS remained small at 24wks, and we saw a specialist for the rest of my pregnancy for weekly ultrasounds and NSTs. They wanted to closely monitor his growth/health, and wanted to check for resistance in umbilical cord flow. He consistently measured small and ultimately was diagnosed IUGR, and was delivered via early induction at 37wks. He is a healthy, happy, but little 2.5yo.

DS' case was not the norm. Oftentimes they'll catch baby at a period of slow growth so that the numbers are off. They wait a few weeks and baby has had a growth spurt and caught up. It's great that your doctor is not concerned. FX for great news at your next appt!

  • If the doctor isn't concerned, then there probably isn't any reason to be concerned :) Every baby can be so different!

  • Sorry for your scare, but I agree with PPs that if the doctor isn't worried I'd try not to be (easier said than done I know!)

  • Sorry for the scare, but it's nice that you have the cvs results to reassure you! I'm sure baby is just having a period of slow growth and everything will be fine!

As long as your dr isn't worried I would really try not to as well. This is the gestation where size and growth start to differentiate based on genetics etc. At my a/a with ds his legs were a couple days behind and the rest of him(head, stomach etc was big)
I'm 5'4" and daddy is only 5'7" so the chances of him not being super tall are pretty strong. And he's always been on the shorter side. He had a growth spurt once that put him in the 50th percentile but other than that he normally stays in the 10-20 percentile range. He's just short. But healthy.

  • Definitely no worries! Did the doctor even mention it (as opposed to you noticing the numbers on your own later?) All those measurements vary widely by this gestation (it's not like a 7 week ultrasound, where an off-measurement usually spells trouble.)

I'm very tall and my partner is the same height as me, and our son had short legs on his ultrasound. When he was born (full term at 7lbs 3oz), he was still a shorty-pants... only 18 inches! He's a happy, healthy 3-year old who is still on the short side. We think he got his grandfather's genes.

Your babe will be OK, mama.

  • If the doctors not concerned, you shouldn't be. She's probably just going to be on the shorter side. When I was pregnant with DS #2, they kept saying his abdomen was measuring small, only they had me worried. I had to have weekly ultrasounds until I saw a different person in the office (due to him being so busy) who put a stop to it. My baby is/was perfect! Ultrasounds aren't always right anyway.

I'm sorry that you're worried, but it's a good sign that the MFM is not. :)

  • Sorry for the scare and the worries - but I agree with all above if doctor isn't worried, try not to worry yourself. Sending lots of good positive vibes your way!

  • Sorry you are worried. Don't google you could get yourself more worked up! I agree with pp; call your doctor if you are really nervous/anxious.
    Positive thoughts!
