Breastfeeding

What happened to my milk?!?

My LO is 14 weeks and EBF. When he was first born I was pumping once a day as well as feeding him and I had so much milk I had serious over supply issues and was told to stop pumping. I did and that solved the oversupply problem and all was well. For the last week I feel like my milk has vanished. I try to pump once at night so my husband can feed him and I have some for when I work (once a week). For the last few days I get nothing when I pump (maybe 2 oz) and baby always seems hungry. Today my LO took 15oz (from my frozen supply) in just 6 hours! I didn't pump during my 6 hour shift and pumped right away and only got 3 oz! I drink lots of water, don't feel stressed, etc what could be the problem? I'm so worried I'm "drying up".

Re: What happened to my milk?!?

  • I'm sorry you are going through this... I am no expert, but I did power pumping for some evenings and that helped almost immediately (3 nights)...

did you stop pumping for a long time? Sometimes your body 'forgets' the pump and it has to get used to it, when I go on holidays for more than 5 days and don't pump my body takes several days before the pump actually extracts milk. Also, try pumping and massaging simultaneously, this helps me to empty as much as possible.

also, if you didn't use the pump for a while, I would consider changing the parts (at least the membranes).

  • Thank you guys for the very helpful advice. I know that 15 oz is a ton-which is why I was so frantic! It was my husband taking care of him-they were outside, playing on the floor, in the swing, etc and he said that he was just extremely fussy and very time he would hold him he would root and look for a nipple. I wondered if he was just starving and not getting enough from the last few days.
I had gone a month without pumping, per the advice of my LC. But yeah I think that may have been my downfall. Baby is only sleeping 3-4 hour stretches at night and nurses a lot during the day. I only go 6 hours when I'm at work once a week. I'm going to try pumping in the am/afternoon and see how the works. I am in it for the long haul!! Thank you!
  • You need to be pumping every 2-3 hours during the day as that is how often baby probably eats. If you go 6 hours or more routinely without BFing or pumping your supply WILL drop.

  • Everyone else has given good advice. Definitely pump at least once during your 6 hour shift, even if it's only once a week. Consider making bottles up ahead of time for DH :)
