How many visits for fetal monitoring?

I went for my third ultrasound on Tuesday, and when I was finished, they told me I have a healthy sized baby with long legs. Then they sent me to schedule my appointments for fetal monitoring and a fourth ultrasound.
At first I thought she said every two weeks, which made a little sense, but then when I got my printout of appointments, I realized she said twice a week. That's absolutely insane! I can't miss that much work, and since they have never told me I'm high risk, it doesn't make sense for so much more testing and another ultrasound (especially since my OB didn't order it). Plus, every visit costs me a copay.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm thinking that they're trying to suck money out of my insurance company.

  • I'd call this morning. Normal procedure is every 2 weeks until 36 weeks and then 1x a week until delivery. I also wont get another ultrasound unless there are issues with DS or they decide to do a growth scan at 39 weeks.

  • Definitely talk to your ob. What if the scheduling person just misunderstood the orders? If you're not high risk, why do they need to see you so often? And if you ARE high risk, you should know this and maybe even go on medical leave early.

    Good luck!

  • This does not sound routine.  You said you aren't high risk.  I'm only seen every 2 weeks after 28 or 32 weeks (I can't remember), then once a week after 36 weeks.

I only have 2 routine ultrasounds, at 8 and 20 weeks.  One at 12 if I had decided to do genetic testing.

They will do more ultrasounds only if I go past my due date, to monitor fluid levels.

I would definitely double check.  Especially because your insurance may not pay for all this monitoring if there's not reason.

  • Are the twice a week visits for NSTs (non stress tests)?? I would definitely ask why you need the extra monitoring, especially this early in the pregnancy.

If those are in fact NST that you are scheduled for twice a week, they are not like normal appointments and you should not have to pay copay (you may have coinsurnace for the actual monitoring though, but you don't see the doc). Since I had GD with my first they consider that high risk, and I had NST twice a week starting at 33 weeks.

  • I agree with PPs that this seems like a lot for a normal pregnancy. I'm higher risk becausenim carrying twins but my NSTs will only be once a week starting at 32 weeks. I've had cervical checks every two weeks until I hit 28 weeks (started at 20 weeks) and I have growth scans every 4 weeks until I deliver. My OB appointments have been every 4 weeks until 30 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks and then every week until the girls arrive. I woudk definitely question why they are pushing for such frequent monitoring.

are you over 35? Gestational diabetes?
I found that site when explaining to a coworker why I'm having weekly BPPs, do you fall into any of those categories? 2x a week seems like a lot if there's not something big going on.
