21 month old not eating

Hi there,

My DS is 21 months old. For the past few weeks he has been eating less & less with each meal. Now he is not eating at all. we have a dr appointment this afternoon but I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue. If so, what did the Dr say? I am terrified something is very wrong. I know that many say "they will eat if/when they're hungry" but this is crazy. He is miserable, crying, trhowing tantrums which is not like him at all. I would think after a few days of not eating, he would be starving! Help!

    My guesses would be ears, teeth, or HFM. Any of those can throw my LOs off their eating game. What did the pedi say?

    I would really check your LO's mouth out and I am sure your pedi will. It could also be a GI issue or other illness too. I really hope you found some answers because with the crying and tantrums it sounds like he doesnt feel good or something is bothering him.

    Does he any favorite food? Sometimes they go through "only peanut butter" or "only crackers" phases for a few days. If you can get him to eat any type of food or a smoothie that will keep him in the habit eating and eventually he'll get over the obsession.

    Sorry for the delay in updating. I took him to the pedi. He was not much help. He said it is normal for toddlers to lose their appetite at this age. I am not satisfied with that answer though. He has lost 7 pounds!!!!!!! The dr was annoyed when we asked to weigh him. I may seem crazy but I am going to get a second opinion just to be sure. No sores in his mouth, he doesn't have favorite foods anymore.....because he just flings the food across the room!

    He's lost 7 pounds?! I am not trying to be dramatic or freak you out, but find the best childrens hospital in your area and make an appt ASAP. No local yocal pediatrician at this point. I hope everything's okay!

    Doctor was annoyed to weigh him? My Ped is not anything special but no matter what we go in for, they always weigh DD. And 7 pounds? Please take him to another doctor asap. I'm no doctor but my mommy instinct would be very alarmed if my DD had lost 7 pounds. I hope you guys can figure out what is going on. Sorry you're dealing with this.

    He is still on Alimentum because his body has never taken to milk. the pedi suggested keeping him on the formula until his 2nd birthday then we will try soy formula. If he takes to that, after w few weeks we will try milk based formula then milk again. He has a bottle around nap time, then another at bed. I have tried a sippy cup instead of a bottle but he doesn't drink as much with the sippy cup.

    Silent reflux is a possibility.  My first son began refusing EVERYTHING (food and drink) just before his 1st birthday.  Turns out he had terrible reflux and we didn't even know.  Prevacid helped the problem pretty quickly (started to improve within a couple weeks).  We only found out because he started going to OT and the therapist noticed a VERY subtle motion he was doing (like a very slight grimace and swallowing motion, but SUPER SUBTLE).  We took him to an ENT and they put a scope down his nose and throat and it was very red and could only be explained by reflux.  I've been following this thread but for some reason this only popped into my head this morning.  Honestly I'd take him to an ENT regardless of what your pedi says, unless they actually discover something else is wrong. My situation was a little different (DS1 was refusing bottles and cups) but it's so hard to know what's going on with the little ones sometimes, I'd look into this.

    I'd get a second consult from a differnet ped...I don't even know the guy but that one is rubbing me the wrong way!!
