I want to join the gif party but don't know how

Will someone please post or direct me to some gif instructions? Where do gifs come from? How do I add one to my post? Can this be accomplished on a phone?

I can't do it on my phone, only the computer.

step 1: google for gif / find gif on interwebz
step 2: copy URL of said gif
step 3: go to post and select "insert image". I think it looks like a little polaroid?
step 4: paste URL in the little box that opens up and submit.

Then it shows up for me.
