Not me (or baby) Graves' disease

I vaguely remember someone saying they may have had Graves' disease while pregnant, and was hoping to get some questions answered.

My friend that's been having a tough pregnancy just got diagnosed with a mild case. They want to put her on 5 mg of a class D medication, and she's scared and looking for opinions before she makes her decision on what to do. She is seeking medical opinions as well, so I was just wondering if anyone dealt with this and could share their experience on what they did. TIA

Re: Not me (or baby) Graves' disease

  • That would be me.  So mine was actually in remission while I was pregnant, flared back up now though, yay.
If her's is mild she could talk to her Dr about taking a beta blocker to treat her symptoms while pregnant then take an antithyroid medication after she delivers. Her Dr should also be checking her free T4, T3 and antibodies to verify that it's Graves and not just a fluke thyroid thing.  But yeah, antithyroid meds are pretty harsh.  Methimazole should be what her Dr is suggesting she take.  If I was her I'd lobby for just taking the beta blocker and monitoring her baby's growth to see if she can get by the next 4 months without taking the drugs..BUT my Endo doesn't really think it's that big of a deal to take them during pregnancy.
From what I understand when the baby is born it may have some thyroid antibodies left and may need to be temporarily treated for Graves but it's not a lifelong thing.
Any other ?s just let me know, hope that was helpful!
