Re: Let's talk about pee

  • I usually give him at least a quick wipe down for pee.

Most of the time yes, unless I'm trying to be quick bc she never sits still anymore while I'm trying to change her
  • I guess I see it being more important for a girl than a boy. I don't do it if I'm in a hurry or it's the MOTN.

wait I'm confused...some people don't?? this literally never occurred to me.

    This
  • I voted "yes every time" for my guy, but only because we have a little diaper rash that we're dealing with (on his lower abdomen), and I'm trying to keep him as dry as possible to help it go away.  Prior to the rash, nope.

It's not about the time it takes.....it's just not necessary. Sorry about spacing, I'm on iPad. If it's just urine you're dealing with, you don't always have to use a wipe, according to Dr. Bender: "The newest diapers are so absorbent, they actually take a lot of urine away from the skin." Plus, since urine is a clean substance, letting a small amount dry on the skin shouldn't be irritating unless your child already has a diaper rash or there's poop in his wet diaper, too. The important thing is to avoid trapping in moisture, so whether you're using wipes or not, let your child air-dry before diapering again. https://www.pregnancymagazine.com/baby/basic-baby-care/ You don’t have to worry about wiping baby down after a pee, Jana [Laura A. Jana, M.D] says, because urine rarely irritates the skin, and because today’s diapers are so absorbent, the skin hardly comes into contact with urine anyway.

  • I'm with @KateMW‌ in this... I always wipe myself after I pee so why wouldn't I wipe LO?

it doesn't really compare. You use tp right? Not a wet wipe. So are you really cleaning yourself with paper, or are you drying yourself? Tp doesn't clean you, it dries you. I do dry both boys with a dry cloth if they had a very wet diaper. But I don't CLEAN them with a wet wipe. And neither has ever had a rash.

  • I just feel like LO smells like pee if I don't wipe him.. Can you not smell it?! I dunno, just grosses me out. I do have a good sniffer so maybe I'm the only one who can smell pee diaper... Is that weird?
  • Wow. Can't believe y'all are taking a poll on this. Hell yeah I wipe my boy every time he pees.

  • The extra absorbent diapers freak me out too...that's a lot of chemicals if you can't feel any wet.
  • This may be semantics here, but I don't wipe after pee; I dab his penis once with a cloth wipe. Usually nothing ends up on the cloth, but I still do it. I don't wipe him bum after pee.

This! I wipe both DS and DD every single time otherwise I feel like the smell like pee.

I also use a soft wash cloth afterwards to make sure they are dry. No rashes in this house.

  • I think some babies are more prone to rashes...it could just be that.
  • @dontstopbelievin, I use a dry cloth too after I've already wiped her (so the bum is clean), & I use it just to dry her off before I put on the vaseline, to help with preventing diaper rash too.  I use the cloth many times & wash it maybe once a week.  It doesn't get dirty or smelly or anything like that since it's pretty much just drying up extra moisture from the wipe.
  • I wipe baby at every diaper change, but bathe her once or twice a week.

  • I guess my FFFC should be I don't wipe LO after every wet diaper. Also DS doesn't wipe his penis after he pees. I told him he needed to, DH told him he didn't. I'm not a guy, so I guess I trusted DH with that.

So the baby nurses at the hospital actually told us that it was super unnecessary to wipe after a pee diaper....wondering if the other non-wipers got told this as well?

Anyway I don't think it's gross. LO has never had a diaper rash and certainly never smells like pee, so it works for us and I don't think it's gross.

I totally get why other people would think it's gross though, but I also think it's irrelevant to use the argument that "you wouldn't not wipe yourself after you pee" because adults don't (typically) pee into diapers.
Totally agree. We were also told it wasn't necessary in the parenting class at the hospital and there was a lot in the media at the time of how over use of wet wipes was causing skin irritation in babies. I don't know about girls, but this works for my little guy. No nappy rash, doesn't smell. He has a bath every evening. I think if you ask any guy they will tell you there is a reason urinals don't have toilet paper.

I thoroughly clean top to bottom for my boy every single diaper change. I couldn't imagine ever not doing it.
