Sleep related *not CIO*

I am continuing my struggle in all things related to sleep...lol I personally feel like D just hates her mattress. I can get her to asleep on any surface except her crib mattress. I have a bed connected to the crib, and I literally have to lay on the crib mattress and BF her to get her to fall asleep and she must be swaddled!

The minute I move away she wakes up and rolls over. If I nurse her on a regular bed; she falls asleep within 2 minutes unswaddled, and I can get up and leave her (under supervision of video camera ,mattress is on the floor). I'm considering just letting her sleep on the spare bed with me next to her. As she gets older just throwing the mattress on the floor New Montessori style and throwing her crib out the window!

Anyone else's babes having this issue?

Any suggestions to help her transition to the horrible uncomfortable crib mattress easier?

At what point can a child sleep on a regular mattress without risk?

Is it similar to the no blanket rule until they are 1? TIA

ETA - I do a little bit of bed sharing, but there is no room in our bed until DH leaves for work. I have a really hard time falling asleep in the nursery. Lose/Lose

I can't get her to fall asleep on her tummy, but sometimes after feeding she rolls onto her tummy herself on her crib mattress. She seems to lift her head up every 10 minutes though. Maybe she is getting used to it. I tried the patting the bottom thing and she just squeals at me...lol

  • I have a friend who is very Montessori and did the mattress on the floor thing and I seriously considered it for awhile there too because we were having such a hard time with cribs.  Its probably fine safety wise.  The only concern would be if she rolled or crawled off while you were sleeping but even then, if its on the floor she probably wouldn't really get hurt if its only a foot or so off the ground. My friend's daughter was crawling by the time she did this and so she knew how to crawl on and off the mattress and she just made sure the whole room was very baby proofed.

Are they on their backs? Have you tried putting her on her side?  My girls HATE sleeping on their backs or stomachs. For naps I shove them sideways in a boppy and they get so comfy but I don't do it at night when I'm not there.  For awhile though, I had a rolled up towel under their crib mattress and would prop them up against it. Now they can sort of get on their side on their own and they do a lot of squirming around before they find the right spot. They are swaddled but recently I started leaving first one arm out and then the other.  Having the arm out helped them position themselves in a way that they were more comfortable.

  • I don't really have any suggestions but I'm goin thru the exact same thing. Sounds just like my LO.

We side car the crib to our bed as well and she still ends up with me. She's waking up every 2-3 hrs for about a month now, I keep thinking (hoping) it's teething and it will end soon!

@ballygirl‌ she falls asleep on her side then once she unlatches she usually rolls on her back. If she is in bed with me she will stay asleep. If she is on her crib mattress she wakes up and rolls over. Maybe I can try the rolled up towel behind her. I would be in the same room with her. I won't leave her until she is comfortably sleeping on her own.

It's like a light switch went off. She was good in merlin magic sleep suit from 3-6months.. Then it went down hill.
She also stopped taking her paci a Month ago as well, she likes to use her momma instead.

@germanpickle‌ is there anything specific I should know about doing this, to keep things safe. Aside from mattress on the ground and child proof the room? Maybe Montessori will have some tips. At least Im not the only one.

@LittlebBabyG2013 is your DD still wearing the MMSS? I ask because DS was sleeping horribly but when we took him out of the MMSS and he had more freedom to move he started STTN again.

No she's out of the suit, I've even put her back in and she sleeps the same so she sleeps without it.

Good Lord I'm so glad it's not just me.
I was planning on dragging the crib into our room and side carring it to try and get him used to the mattress with me right there.
I'm have the sads that it hasn't worked for you ladies.

@ellaf Yes, she definitely knows the difference. I was so hopeful the sidecar ring thing was going to work. The one positive is that; if she sleeps on the crib side. You do not have to worry about her rolling out of bed.

I wrapped (and tucked in very tightly) a fleece blanket over the PnP mattress (DS is still rooming-in). I think that mattress is awful and DS was previously in the "cushy" RnP. He sleeps better with the comfort of that and sleeps much better with a fan on high (not pointed towards him). With that said. We *I hope* are just getting over about 2 months of AWFUL sleep. The last few nights he's slept about 6 hours straight, nurses, then back to sleep for another 3-4. I can deal with that.

I didn't think there were crib mattresses that were softer. I thought it was a safety thing. I can check into that though. I know I got the middle of the line mattress.

  • I've been trying to upload a picture without luck (as usual, damn TB and server-use from Germany). We have a babybed on one side of the bed, then our two mattresses that are not on the floor, and then a set of horizontal bars on the other side of the bed. She sleeps with the door open because she sleeps better with some family noise in the background. She isn't one to move when waking up without calling out first.

I took this same approach with my first - we tried the mattress on the floor but I tore my ankle and couldn't get up and down anymore, so up they went again -  and he never fell off the bed. Ever.

Although I'm American, I find the hysteria about bedding strange because all of my German friends use normal bedding with their kids as soon as they can sit and crawl. Tilly can do all that and more, so we have put the bedding back onto our beds.

    Have I helped at all?

  • Maybe try a different sheet. DD didn't sleep well in her p&p when we went on vacation. The sheet was thin and not that comfy. After 1 1/2 nights of constant waking, I changed to a quilted sheet I have on her other p&p and she slept great the rest of the week. On her crib, I use jersey sheets from BBB. That over a thick crib cover make it nice and comfy. The quilted p&p sheet is also from there. GL.

D also screams first before she moves. I got her asleep last night on her crib mattress. I transferred her there. Had crib vibration on sound machine and she still woke up in less than an hour screaming. I wish I knew why she woke up so soon...

  • To add to the 'different sheet' tip, do you have a mattress protector? Although my mattress is waterproof, I have a quilty waterproof mattress cover (BRU house brand). It makes a huge difference in comfort to the crib.

@calibr8te I do have a mattress protector. I'm not sure that it adds any cushion to the mattress though. It was the only cover available. I live in North Dakota with limited stores...lol

  • How often is she waking in a night?  We went through some rough months, but even now that he sleeps fairly well, he will always wake up 30 min after putting him down. I nurse him and he is back down pretty quick. He will then carry on the rest of the night either waking up every few hours, or only once in a night, or not at all. No matter what, he always has to be up exactly 30 mins after bedtime. It has become part of the bedtime routine at this point and I can't explain it.

She wakes up in about an hour from going down. Then she wakes up every 2 to 3 hours until she wakes up.

  • Mine does this too, in fact he has already woken up three times this evening since I put him down. He did just cut his front top tooth and his other front one is swollen. I have started going to bed later in order to avoid getting up out of bed more than once or twice for his wake ups. I  will likely have another wake up but he sleeps his longest stretch in the early am.

Therefore,  I guess I am no help to you.

@ calibr8te it's just so frustrating. I know she can't be that hungry. However, nursing her is the quickest way to get her back to sleep. I've tried sneaking in a pacifier when we get near that time, but she won't take it. I've offered her a bottle and she won't take that either. We usually go to bed at 11 pm, because if we go any sooner she wakes up like every 10 minutes. She used to STTN have no idea where that kid went... Lol

  • My husband reminded me last night that this is the period of extreme mental development and we were warned with our first that sleep could be very strange. Maybe that?
