C-Section Momma's -- When Did You Drive?

I'm 1 week PP and feel really good.  Tuesday I crashed and now I'm on the up.  I know the one concern they have is the narcotic drugs; which I am not on anymore.  Their other concern was being able to react fast enough while driving in the event of an accident.  When do you know when you're healed enough for that?  Do I go practice slamming on the break in the car?

Re: C-Section Momma's -- When Did You Drive?

  • I started at 2 weeks also but had zero stamina for standing so where I drove was limited (I needed a Target fix at the time). My Dr's. advice for everything (sex, exercise driving, housework) was simple. If it hurts, don't do it.

This is very scientific... One of my OBs told me I could drive when I could stomp my foot on the floor and it didn't hurt. I guess if you have to react quickly the sudden jarring could be very painful. I started driving again 2 weeks PP.

This plus the pumping brakes, reaction time, and being off pain meds. My recovery was slightly rocky so it was 3 weeks till I drove and even then it was very little.

I started a week pp, I wanted to see my babies in the special care nursery and nothing was going to stop me. I wasn't taking narcotics at that point. My doc said as long as I could drive without thinking about my incision(I think its the same as the stomping your foot theory) it would be fine!

  • I drove home from the hospital, which I don't really recommend but ther wasn't another way around it (I had been driven in my car to the hospital by a coworker after my water broke at work).

I think I waited another 3 days? So 8 days total? before driving. My babies were in the NICU and I had no other way to see them, so I drove.

  • I believe it was 7 or 8 days after my c/s.  Could I have driven earlier?- yes.  I honestly had a very very easy recovery- the only real pain I had was back pain from my epi- and that stopped at 4 days post op.  I stopped my narcotic pain relief 5 days post op, when i was released from the hospital.  My DH and my mom refused to let me drive earlier.  But after my mom went home and my DH was back to work- I drove myself to the hospital to see my boys in the NICU in the mornings.
  • I drove less than a mile to take DD1 to school each day at 1 week pp.  I waited the 2 week pp for the longer drives.

I was never given any restrictions.  I drove one week after my c-section. (I had stopped narcotics).

I had an excellent recovery though and was feeling pretty good at that point.

  • I waited the two weeks that my doctor advised, even though I had no idea why on earth it was required as I stopped taking narcotics after I left the hospital and my recovery was quick and uncomplicated.  But it sucked to have one twin at home and one in the NICU and waste an able-bodied adult driving me to the hospital and back when we needed all hands on deck at home.

  • I was cleared at 2 weeks by my MFM, but I felt like I could have driven sooner, but we were just driving back and forth to the NICU, so MH or my mom drove me. It worked out.

  • I was told 6 weeks. But I drive after 4 because 6 was crazy. I needed to drive 20 mins to get to the hospital my girls were in so I needed to drive.
