Starting solids

The girls will be 6 months old on June 4. Pedi recommended waiting until 6 months to start solids (fine with me). I've heard through the grapevine that rice is pretty much unneccesary. What did you start with?

Also, Harper is in PT for torticollis. She is doing really well but is still working on sitting up straight. Would this be cause for concern when starting her on solids? Should we wait a bit longer for her? Give it a try and see how it goes? She also has reflux so I'm interested to see if maybe giving her rice/oatmeal may help with that.

Thoughts?

Re: Starting solids

  • There are a lot of differing views on this, so you need to do what you feel comfortable with and your pediatrician recommends. Having said that----My girls also have reflux and L is awaiting her cute little helmet for flatness (won't even try to spell the medical term ) :) They had already been on some rice by doctor recommendation for the reflux. It constipated them, so no we do oatmeal cereal by spoon mixed with fruit (baby food). We also feed baby food vegetables. My Dr. had us start early...around 5 months, and said she wanted them eating twice a day by their 6 month appointment (on Monday). We do 4 days for newly introduced food, and they are doing great. I know there are some other ways people are introducing new food. Our doctor seems to be pretty aggressive and "old school" but we really like her so far, and she has young kids, so she can relate.

6 months should be good. The main thing is to introduce one food at a time and wait a couple days before trying the next... then if they have any sort of reaction, you aren't wondering which food caused it. Start with any stage 1 baby foods (cereal or the jarred). If you plan on making your own baby food, grab a jar or two from the store so you have a reference point for the texture you want to shoot for. Some of our DDs favorites were the carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, and any fruit, and she actually loved the barley cereal, although it is difficult to find. She hated the rice cereal (I don't blame her. That stuff is gross) with a passion. If you're worried about the torticillis, you can always call and ask the doctor. They won't resent the call and question. The stage 1 foods are for "supported sitters," so I think it would probably be OK.

6 months is the current recommendation. Rice cereal has a bad rep because it is empty calories. It isn't meant to be nutritious, its value is in training how to eat from a spoon. We started with watery homemade purees or stage 1 store ones.

  • My boys are 7.5 months.  Their first food was avacado at 5.5 months.  After a month of trying baby led weaning we moved to using the Kidsme Food Feeder.  It was perfect for us.  We are able to give our babies fresh fruit and vegetables and not worry about choking. Good luck with whatever method you select!  It's exciting watching them try new flavors and experience eating for the first time.

  • We started just after 6 mo and did a mix of purees and BLW style finger foods. We did start w rice, but I think they got it a grand total of twice before I moved on to other foods and didn't look back. We used the extra cereal to coat slippery foods like avocado down the road.

Around 8-9mo, we slowly dropped the purees out and by 9.5mo they were doing BLW full time. They're great w finger foods and if you give them big enough chunks of food, are great w moving the food around in their mouth.
