Clothing for Nursing in Public

Hi Everyone!

I'm looking for suggestions on clothing options that will make it easy to nurse in public (most likely with a cover). With #1, I rarely nursed in public and when I did, it was usually in a car or mother's room, basically somewhere somewhat private. With #2, I would like to be more comfortable with public nursing. I would love it if you could share clothing options that worked for you and if possible post links to those options.

Thanks in advance!

  • Cross-front tops and dresses are great!

  • I've been living in nursing tanks under a regular shirt. No bra to fumble with. Shirt goes up, tank gets pulled down. Only exposes what the baby needs.

  • I second the tank under a v-neck shirt. Works gret for me. I still use a cover but it's mostly for my husband's comfort since very little is showing.

Then again, he's started to become distracted lately and you never know when he'll pull off and then start talking to me leaving me exposed!

  • I always wore either a nursing tank and regular shirt, or an actual nursing shirt.  I've bought all my nursing shirts from Motherhood Maternity (usually online).

I have never used a nursing cover, but if you are worried about being discreet I think the best option is a tank and shirt.  You pull up the shirt and the tank covers your stomach.  You don't expose as much breast because your shirt is there.  With a nursing shirt only you expose more.

If you're using a cover, any shirt that you can pull down to expose your breast should work.  I have a lot of scoop neck and vneck tees.

I never wear multiple layers of clothing. I don't get the appeal of having 6 shirts to nurse.
This.  If you're using a cover, anything that will give you/LO easy access works.  That can be anything from those clip-down tank tops to any top that can be pulled down easily.  I tried that normal top with the nursing tank option and that was a pain to deal with, especially when I used a nursing cover.
  • I also use a cover and wear a nursing bra and a looser fitting t shirt or tank top. I say looser because it's easier to lift up and doesn't feel really constricting. I have a couple of nursing tank tops but I typically save those for bed. I'm always fearful the clip is going to come undone and my boob will go flopping out.

This is what I do as well.  I only use a cover when around men that I know, and even then DD tries to pull it off.

  • I think a cover really just draws more attention to yourself.  Like, "Look. That woman is wearing a burka! Wait, it's just a nursing cover."

I wear v-neck shirts and pull them down. If I am feeling exposed I might cover the top part of my boob with a muslin blanket after he latches.  But I don't cover his head.  I love the blankets from aden + anais that are at Target.

I wore a cami under almost every shirt before getting pregnant. Now I just make sure it is a stretchy one! So nursing bra, stretchy cami, t/shirt, then a cardigan/zip/button-up long sleeve if it is chilly. T-shirt goes up, cami and bra go down. I often use a cover, but DS is in the stage where he likes to pull off a lot a goof around smiling at me - super cute but kinda just leaves my nipple hanging out there.
This except I don't use a cover. Just my personal preference. DD definitely pulls off to smile/chat right now but I am pretty small chested so if I shrug my shoulder, my nipple kind of drops down into the cup of my nursing bra.

I don't own nursing camis because the Forever21 ones are stretchy and cost <$3 and nursing ones were like $20.
