Uppababy Vitsa vs. Bugaboo Cameleon for shorter parents in the city

We are looking at the Uppababy Vista and the Bugaboo Cameleon for our first child. We live in Boston and my husband and I are 5 2" and 5 5". I know there are pros/cons to both, but would love to hear thoughts/recommendations for folks who have either and live in a city. This will be our everyday stroller for walks/errands/etc., but once in a while will need to fold in the car. We don't live in a walk up (single family) and have decent storage. Thanks!

  • I would go into the store & actually try folding them & hoidting them into your vechicle multiple times. I looked at a bunch of 23 plus pound strollers with amazing featured and once we finally went to the store and lift/folded them, and narrowed down the car seats, realized the stroller weight was huge deal for me.

I got a City Mini & later City Mini GT. We are using both but they are akward to put into back of our cross over SUV most of the time. I have complete stroller envy for some of the Valco strollers for this reason.

The cameleon will be better for you guys. The uppa baby vista is HUGE. It might be difficult for you to handle.

And if you want a "smaller" full size stroller, check out the bj city versa, uppa baby Cruz, bugaboo bee and orbit baby.

Thank you! I have spent hours at BuyBuyBaby and Magic Beans walking them around the streets and testing them in the car. I like the smaller feel of the Cameleon but Vista has good storage. I haven't considered the others, but will look into those as well - thanks!  Agreed we want something that feels more compact.

For the Uppababy Vista, do you find that the bar underneath the storage gets in the way at all? How about the height of the handle (I find even the lowest setting might be too high for me)? Do you fold the stroller everyday? Thanks!
  • I originally got the vista when I lived in downtown chicago. It was an extremely popular choice. When we moved to the burbs, it became too cumbersome for me to fold. The fold was not intuitive to me like that of the citi mini. I ended up buying the uppa baby cruz and live it. More compact and fits in my trunk well. Very easy fold too.

  • I have the UBV. Honestly, I'm not a fan. While it's a very well made stroller, it's heavy, big and bulky. I find it cumbersome to close and load in and out of the trunk of my car. I might have a different opinion if we did live in a city and didn't need to open/close/fold it and if it was left standing vs storing it in our car mainly. I also find it wide..so walking downtown etc is tough especially with small shops..i struggle to get it in and out of some doorways at stores because of the width of the wheels.

Once DD was old enough, we swtiched to the Gluxe umbrella stroller and use it over the Vista 9 times out of 10.

the UBV was nice to stroll around with but, for me at least, not practical and just a real hassle.

We also live in Boston and I am under 5 ft tall.  We have the UBV and I really like it.

    Pros:
    • the basket storage:  huge and wonderful, like the pp said, the bar in the middle is actually pretty helpful for organizing what you throw down there
    • the wheels:  I can push this thing around the cobblestones and bricks of the north end, beacon hill, etc without any trouble, and without bouncing LO all over the place.
    • the wheels are tall enough to go through some snow or rain puddles due to poor drainage without getting everything in the bottom all wet
    • the price is significantly less than the bugaboo
    • the handle on the lowest setting is fine for me
For me the cons are that it is a pretty big stroller and can be cumbersome to fold/lift in and out.  That said, we live on the 2nd floor with no elevator and no where to store it.  We take it up and down each time, fold it, and store it on a stroller hook on the back of a closet door- so it isn't that bad.

We did actually recently purchase a travel stroller (the mountain buggy nano) for flights and I may use it if we are ever taking a cab to a museum or something where I don't need the large wheels of the UBV.  But I paid less for both the UBV and Nano than I would for the Bugaboo.  LO is 8 months and if I had to choose again I would stay with the UBV.

  • We have the Cruz, it has all the great features of the Vista, but is lighter, folds more compact and stands upright while folded. The basket is enormous, bigger than the Vista I think. The Bugaboo isn't worth the price IMO. Plus I don't think it can be folded with the seat on which is a huge PITA IMO.

  • I think that either the Bug or the UBV is a great city stroller to use to travel from the home and around town. I chose the UBV for this. I do not regret buying it at all. Everyone in the family, including my husband and child love it.

I can carry a ton in the basket, and folding it with the seat attached is so easy. it stand on its wheels and takes up little room against a wall.

That said, it is not a great stroller for getting in and out of cars with or taking on public transit. For that you want some kind of umbrella stroller.

I went with a really large umbrella (Cybex Callisto) for my second car/transit stroller (only recently purchased it), but it does a great job going over rough sidewalks and has nice features of full sized strollers albeit with a smallish basket.

The cybex Callisto stroller can essentially function like a snap n go, too if you are using an infant car seat. I didn't use it for this, but that is something I would like to use it for in the event I have a second child.

So, end of story, is that you will probably want 2 strollers. :)
