Hives from grass

Every time Milla plays in the grass, specifically my inlaws yard, she gets hives. It has rarely happened from our yard. They live in the country, their back leads to a farm, they have an outdoors dog and a barn cat. Their yard it large, and it happens no matter where in the yard she plays, it is more severe on one side of the yard though.

Could it be the actual grass, or something on/in the area? I'm going to bring it up to the pedi soon.

She's also been getting random, almost heat rash looking, dots behind her knees and neck. It's been warm the past few days, but not super hot.

Ainsley occasionally gets sort of a rash when she plays in our yard too. It is usually on her torso and hands/arms. I wondered the same thing as you. I was also thinking it could be pollen, when we have high pollen days. She is also extremely fair, and her hair is coming in red, so I think she also just has really sensitive skin (if that makes sense ). I mentioned it to our pedi and he didn't seem too concerned.

  • Milla is really fair and has very sensitive skin as well.
They just look so nasty on her little legs and arms.

I know. It looks awful. It doesn't seem to bother her at least. I wonder if children's Benadryl or Claritin would help.
  • I just spoke with my mom about it. She sniggered and said I did the same thing. She said I always had mysterious hives or red spots on me. She also said it was really bad when we went to the beach :/

I have several allergies, I guess she just, unfortunately, takes after her messed up mom. :-w

I can't have anything with pseudofedrin in it and it makes DS bounce off the walls, so I'm really hesitant to try Benedetto.

  • DD is sensitive to grass and outside stuff too (took me a little while to figure it out). We were having eczema problems, which started as soon as it got warm, so I switched all her wash (body, detergent, soap) to dye/fragrance free stuff which seems to help. For the outside stuff, make sure your DD is well moisturized because our skin is absorbent and a moisturizer will help create a barrier against stuff they're allergic to (this is what the allergist told us). It helps somewhat but she still breaks out in red patches similar to the pics you posted. We try to lather her up in a thick cream when she gets out of baths, also the aveeno baby oatmeal packs in the bath seem to help. I have sensitive skin so I know she gets it from me.

  • M had something similar the other day after playing outside all day with the baby-sitter.  I think it was from a little dog jumping on her leg with claws, but at the time I thought it looked like a reaction I get if I roll around in grass.  It didn't bother her and went away in a day.  Usually a shower will solve any grass reaction problem.  I can occasionally get the red behind the knees too, if sweating a lot. Goes away with a shower too, or shortly after. But if it doesn't go away, could be yeast or something so I would consult the pedi.  I do not think there are chiggers in Michigan and they are nothing to worry about anyway.  They usually only get you in tight areas, like where your sock elastic hits.  I do not think you get scabies from the yard, but I guess there could be an infection of some type from one of the outdoor pets.  I would not worry about that unless it does not go away.  There could be some kind of deposition from the farm if they are spraying a lot of pesticides or something, but as long as she's not over there all the time and she gets a bath after, I would not worry too much about that.

It's probably a mold allergy.  Mold grows in grass very easily and being a country dweller myself, its VERY hard and expensive to treat acres and acres of yard so we personally rarely do it.  Most people who live in neighborhoods either do it themselves or have lawn care.  I'm guessing since its not the entire yard that does it (if so I would guess maybe the type of grass- because there's numerous out there) then its a mold issue.  I myself am allergic to grass and at a young age would break out similar to what your LO does.  The only options were allergy medicine (which being that your LO doesn't live full time at your parents may not be something of interest to you) and not playing in the grass (especially fresh cut grass) without pants on and putting a heavy blanket down when sitting in the grass.
