Parenting after a Loss

BLW'ers come in!

The last couple of weeks we've been giving Baby Boots some bits of food to keep him entertained while we eat dinner. Otherwise we had to take turns eating and watching him. We can't eat in front of him without sharing or he gets aggravated. He's had broccoli, cucumber, watermelon, banana, chicken, avocado, and a marshmallow (which was interesting - I gave it to him and instantly regret it, tried to take it away and there were TEARS). He had some potato but he wasn't crazy about that, same for bread. I guess he's not a carb kid.

Anyway everything I've read about BLW is 'before 1 just for fun', that they will spend months just playing with food and not really eating much until they get the hang of it. Well I've been changing diapers that tell me HE'S EATING IT. And not insignificant amounts based on the carnage in the diaper.

He hasn't cut back on his BM intake as far as I can tell, so maybe it's not really an issue. I was just really surprised to find he's actually eating the stuff! And he's not even 6 months old, AND he was a preemie! I hope I'm not breaking my baby or anything.

Re: BLW'ers come in!

  • Good job Baby Boots!  We didn't really do BLW, but I say keep giving him food as long as he's still drinking BM like he should.  PJ is about to be 14 mths, and on days she drinks more milk, she'll eat less food.  I think it's just like us adults, some days you'll want to eat more than others.  Don't worry about a feeding schedule for solids yet, and just try to stick to the BM feeding schedule and giving food when he wants you to share.

We just breastfed before offering solids, but yes, DD was an earnest eater very early, and still is! When she was just slightly older than 6months (so shortly after we started offering non-BM), she literally snatched my pizza off my plate and shoved it in her mouth.

That said, she didn't decrease her amount of milk until very recently (maybe around 15/16 months?).

  • We use a mix of BLW and purees.  Sounds like you are doing it right, but I wanted to address the preemie issue.  As far as my pedi is concerned, as long as they aren't showing issues with immaturity in swallowing, i.e. frequent gagging or choking, it is fine to go off of LO's actual age and start as early as 4 months.  We held off until about 6.5 months, but could have started earlier.

That's good to know! I was worried I was really giving solids to a 4.5 month old instead of 5.5, haha!

Ditto what all PP said. They had great advice. You definitely are not breaking Baby Boots, so no worries there. He is just eating like a champ! :)

Keep up the good work, mama! Just remember, always offer BM before solids, and you will be good to go!

  • Thank you ladies! We will keep doing what we're doing! It's a relief to know we're doing the right thing with him. He had some plums and broccoli last night, he really loves that broccoli. Actually he loves everything we've given him except potato and bread. I guess he's not a carb kinda guy.
