NT SCAN

Hello, so I'm starting my 12th week and in the last few days, I've had a few people ask me when my scan is. I know I turned it down last pregnancy. But I haven't even been asked to schedule it. Don't most dr's ask about this? And I thought with my age (36), it would be an even bigger deal. Any thoughts on this?

Re: NT SCAN

  • Yes, I think it is.  I assumed most people get the NT scan, I didn't think I could even turn it down.  We turned down the Harmony test because we thought NT scan and blood tests should be enough for us to know any abnormalities of the baby.  Besides Harmony was out of pocket (I'm 33, 35+ is covered by insurance) but NT was covered.

The NT scan was not mandatory for us but it was offered and encouraged. We definitely wanted it since we opted out of all other optional testing.

After 10 months of ttc via medicated IUIs and two early losses, we finally got our boys- Perfect premie twins born 5/27/14.

  • It was the weirdest conversation when I called the Dr's office. The nurse didn't even know what I was talking about when I said NT SCAN. How is that possible? I explained my age, and how at the last location with my son, they asked every pregnant person. She was dumbfounded. So now I'm even more confused.

Perhaps they refer out to an MFM for the NT scan? My OB doesn't do the NT scan herself, she referred us to an MFM. I don't think the office staff at my OB's office would know what an NT scan is either. Maybe you should request an appt with an MFM (always a good idea with twins anyways).

  • Mine never said anything to me during our weekly ultrasounds until week 11. Then it was like "Do you want to do the test for downs on your next visit?" And I was like "uhmmm the NT scan?" She confirmed that's what it was.

Maybe they just figured I wouldn't know what it was?

  • I was surprised I even got one. I never had one with DD, but when I met my MFM for my first (and only) appointment he did the NT right then and there. If you really want it I'd be persistent since it needs to be done pretty quickly!

  • I had it done at my mfm. My ob never said anything about it.

We had the NT scan at the OB, though I wish it had been at the MFM as their equipment is much better...it was the last US we had at the OB...all the rest have been with the MFM...
