Need advice on a feeding/sleep question.

I am a FTM age 40 of an 11 week old son.  I am so anxious over his sleep and eating habits. I breastfed for the first 8 weeks and also supplemented with bottle because my supply was low.  Now I am exclusively bottle feeding as I will be going back to work soon.  The question is some days he gets up early and eats very well about 4 oz every 3 hours. However, some days he only eats about 3 oz. and eats more often. I just worry because I got him up this morning to feed him at 7:00 and he didn't seem hungry and didn't want to eat..  He went to bed last night at 10:00 after eating 4 oz.   His last feeding was at 4:00 am.  He went back to sleep at 8:00 a.m. Is this normal?  I am having trouble getting him on a routine but I try to feed him when he acts hungry. He is having the normal amount of wet and dirty diapers and the doctor at his 2 month appointment said he was growing fine.  Anybody have any advice on feeding or sleep schedules, etc. I may be worrying too much but it took us 17 years to have a child and I stress about everything.  Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Why are you worried when your doctor isn't?  Your child is a human not a robot, schedules are great but a slight change day to day in time fed/amount needed is NORMAL.  You are stressing when it is not necessary.  I hope you learn to enjoy your blessing more and worry a little less.

  • I vote worrying too much. If his diapers are fine, his growth is good, and the pediatrician has no concerns, then you don't need to worry.

Think about it this way - do you eat exactly the same amount on an exact schedule? Babies are not machines. Some fall into schedules more easily, some do not. Some sleep long stretches at 11 weeks, some do not. Feed him when he is hungry, let him sleep when he is tired. And relax.

Eva goes from pigging out 1 minute to falling asleep after 5 minutes the next. I would it worry, just think about how you eat too, some days you are starving and others you are not so hungry. I don't think anyone should worry about schedules now, they come later. Good luck and try not to stress. I'm a FTM at 38.

  • What helps me stay calm is I think of just a total amount (just ballpark) that my baby needs to get in 24 hours. So sometimes he can do full meals, sometimes snacks, and his body seems to know when it eventually gets to the full daily amount.
