What to do with pumped milk?

I usually leave the bottle out until LO is ready to eat since it can be left out for 6 hours. Then whatever is left over I put in the fridge to warm up and feed her later on.

Problem is, I'm noticing a milky/sour smell from refrigerated milk and I understand that BM shouldn't smell. Is it going bad bc I left it out before refrigerating it?

Also, at what point do you freeze, immediately after pumping or from the fridge to freezer?

Re: What to do with pumped milk?

  • When you say "left over" is it the same bottle she drank out of? Or do you dump the pumped milk in a different bottle for her to eat out of (and add little by little)? If her saliva is mixing with it and then you put it in the fridge, the enzymes in her saliva are breaking the milk down, which makes it go sour.

  • Like @kjsmith9‌ said, if LO drinks from the bottle, it shouldn't be saved for later. Occasionally I'll leave the remainder of a bottle for the next feeding if it's within a couple hours, but I don't refrigerate or reheat it and I always smell test it.
  • Yes it has been milk she drank from! I thought it was ok to save it bc of the antibodies. I guess I'll pour a smaller amount into a bottle for drinking at a time

i think its the same reason why we don't eat directly from a yogurt container unless we are going to eat the whole thing because the spoon would have our saliva on it and the yogurt gets sour...same reasoning I guess just like the rest of pps said

  • Well, many moms will serve leftovers at the next meal without issue, I'd say the more likely culprit is leaving it at room temp that long. For me, if it were going to be more than 2 or 3 hours, I'd put it in the fridge.

  • Does your LO eat the same amount each time? If so o when you pump, you could leave out what you know will get eaten and refrigerate the rest. Others have already suggested what my thoughts were on why it would smell sour.

Re: freezing. I work full time and pump for DC bottles so I freeze once a week. Usually Wednesday, because my output is low at the beginning of each week so I wait until I normalize again. So on Wednesdays I am usually 20 oz or so ahead of DD and I freeze all except tomorrow's daycare bottles and then like 4 or 5 extra oz JIC. My frozen milk typically is 2 day old fridge milk. I've never frozen freshly pumped milk.

  • So this morning I seperated 3oz for her to drink and put the other 2oz in the fridge immediately after pumping. I took it out and warmed it this evening and it had a milky smell. DH says he couldn't smell anything but I swear there was a smell...very subtle but it shouldn't smell at all...right?

can I refrigerate leftovers she drank from?

And is it ok to reheat BM more than once? If I heat it and she only ends up having a small amount can I put it back in the fridge?
