Preemies

Where to find good NICU stuff??

Hi all,

I'm new here, and I'm loving the support and the advice everyone shares. I had a 28 weeker on May 1st, he's been so strong and he's doing really well. I try to visit him every day, and I LOVE kangaroo care!

What I am wondering is this - if your little one was in the NICU, or still is in the NICU, where did you go online to find good stuff to use in the NICU?
I don't want to go shopping at the store - pregnant ladies and healthy newborns make me cry, so I want to find information, support and shopping online.

I found one store I love - EVERYtinyTHING - and I found a blog I love - Preemies101. Usually I ask my girlfriends for recommendations, but none of my friends have had Preemies or NICU babies.

Where else have you found stuff for the NICU? What kinds of stuff did you buy that made your NICU experience better? I want to try to make it feel a little more like home, I want to feel a little more comfortable with the situation. I try to focus on the positive, and I want to celebrate my amazing little guy!

Do you mean clothes for the baby or things to do while you're in the NICU?
For clothes, https://www.preemiestore.com/ is good. We got a lot from there.

  • Anything really - advice for surviving the NICU, cute clothes, ideas for how to cope.
I checked out the preemiestore, it wasn't quite for me - can't exactly say why.  But it's good to know you liked them, maybe I can give it a try.
What clothes did people buy? Did you have any trouble having your NICU let your baby wear the clothes?  My LO isn't in clothes yet, but they say soon....

Congratulations of the birth of your son and welcome! We bought some Carter's preemie footie pjs with snaps, not zippers so they can thread the leads through. I think Carter's website is pretty good and they have a lot of sales. My DD started wearing clothes when she went into the open crib at around 2 weeks actual, 33 weeks gestational. I know what you mean about crying when you see pregnant ladies & healthy newborns. I went out in search of enfacare a few days before she was released and started looking at photo albums/memory books. What a mistake! Pages for the baby shower, when mommy went into labor, and a whole bunch of other stuff I never experienced. Someone on my BMB suggested a preemie memory book. They have them on amazon and I wish I had gotten one while she was in the NICU. They have a page where you can record their weight every day and milestones/progress in the NICU. Wishing you a short & uneventful NICU stay!

  • Good suggestion! Thanks. I will check it out.

That makes sense what you say about hearing the news of a memory book after it was too late. That's why I'm asking here now - I ask the nurses for suggestions and I swear they don't have any idea about buying these things or where to find them. I thought they would!

Did your nurses or your hospital help you find stuff for preemies?

No, I never asked our nurses about that. Even BabiesRUs had some preemie clothes. Other than that they don't really require anything different from a full term baby. I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "stuff for preemies". The memory book is something I would have liked to have. Take pictures, kangaroo whenever you can, and take some time for yourself, too.

Congrats on your baby! We found preemie clothes at Babies R Us and Carters. My mom actually got most of that for us. As for other stuff, we got a pretty blanket to cover her isolette, and receiving blankets to put under her. It just looked so much better when she wasn't laying on a white hospital sheet. That's really all the "stuff" we needed, everything else was provided by the hospital.
    Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the feedback,
Usm123 - I love the idea of a microwavable sterilizer! Thanks for that idea! And Pips09 - our hospital just puts plain hospital blankets over the isolettes, but I think it would look way cuter with our own blanket - did you get something special, or just a regular blanket that's big enough?

I guess I got the idea that there are special things for preemies after going to that first shop, EveryTinyThing because they have stuff I hadn't heard of like the kangaroo care shirt, the NICU art, the Making Milk cookies.... maybe it's not so much that preemies need unique things, but that the NICU might be better/easier/prettier with NICU-specific things and ideas.

I'm excited because my MIL bought some of the art cards, the ones that have the saying "Thought I be but LITTLE i be FIERCE" which seems totally perfect for my LO. I'll let you guys all know how they turn out. At least it's something to make it nicer - out NICU is pretty bland and uninspiring, depressing actually.

    @LilFelixsMama

I just got a pretty fleece blanket that was big enough, nothing special. It still has sentimental value since I saw it over her every day.

She wont be able to wear clothes until she is 4lbs so alot of the cute stuff people bought us will probably go unused :-( hats are good though.  I have been making isolette covers for her. i traced a pattern and sewed them together. it has been very enjoyable.
