Name your crawl mat

I'm thinking we really need two: one for downstairs on the hard wood floors and one for upstairs on the carpet. What do y'all have that isn't too expensive? I've heard varying opinions on the foam mats. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Re: Name your crawl mat

  • Not sure if this is what you are talking about but we have this in our living room for a play area.

  • Jo tends to follow me around the house with her crawling, so I give up on the mats. I try to keep baby legs on her to help protect her knees,b ut they fall down often due to her chubby thighs.

I agree with PPer that the baby is going to be everywhere and you just can't cover everywhere. I did put my older DD in pants or baby legs all the time when she was learning to crawl to protect those knees a little. Anyways, if you want a mat and are near an ikea they have a $20 tumbling may that is nice. We got it for older DD but it works great for DS to play on too. It's a great price for a decent sized mat and it folds up for easy storage.

  • We've got this one (clicky). Right now, it's in the corner of our living room with all of DS's toys. He's not crawling yet (or anywhere near crawling) so he just rolls around on it. It stays in place though and at this point, he can't pull it apart.

I have to tell you, as a second time mom, don't bother. Unless you are ready to cover the entire area, or gate it off they will crawl off. I promise their knees/legs/head will be fine. I went all out and got mats for DS when he was learning to crawl and it took all of a week before it was impossible to keep him on them. I was shocked by how tough his knees were- we have a huge air circulating grate in our living room (have I mentioned how much I hate my craphole) and he was crawling over that without even slowing down.

I was actually planning to gate off at least one of them probably. After reading this, I'm thinking that maybe we shouldn't waste the money though when there are so many other things we need to get...unless I can find one at a garage sale or something.

I throw down an ancient king-size comforter that was mom mom's when I was a kid.

Same. We use my old aqua colored comforter that has hot air balloons all over it. Does the trick!

  • Not gonna lie. I don't see the point. They won't stay on it and you can't cover your entire floor. Just throw some leg warmers on for a little extra padding if you are so worried. But honestly, you probably care more than baby does.

I just realized I typed 'mom mom's' up there, when I meant 'my mom's' . I do not call my mom 'mom mom', that's just silly.

I read that as it was your grandmother's comforter lol I was very impressed how well it held up through 3 generations!
  • I also throw a comforter on the ground.  He won't stay restricted to one area so a small sized mat does me no good.  He is mesmerized by the huge play rug at my librarian friend's school library.  I thought about it. but it is a $300 carpet so I stopped thinking about it.

I feel dumb. I didn't even know this was a thing. I've just been putting down old blankets and whatnot, but really just letting him go where ever. Mom fail?
