June 2013 Moms

Should I 'work' before my leave is over?

So I have a client and my Sales Supervisor requesting me in a meeting next Wednesday BUT my Maternity leave isn't over until June 6th officially.  The GM doesn't want me starting before my official return date.

I was considering trying to work out a deal where I work that day or a half day at least in exchange to get M's birthday off.  Thoughts?

  • Oh wow! Well if that were the case I'd be screwed for sure!! I think that is why my GM isn't crazy about the idea but he should tell his employee (my Supervisor!) that!

I feel like I'm between a rock and hard spot here with the client requesting me and my direct report putting a bit of pressure on me.

  • Mm I probably wouldn't strictly because it's your last days off with him. Do you not have his birthday off to begin with? That would be sweet if you could work that out so you could. You would have to report your income to EI. If you want to though I don't think its a big deal legally. You just would get what you earned deducted I would think.

Basically I am no help. Whatever you want to do is best. Your client should understand either way.
  • Personally, if I liked my employer/the client, I would just do it as a favour to them.

  • @Mufflerlove I wasn't even thinking of the getting paid part of it! I'm salary (though less than minimum wage) plus commission.  So I will be receiving the commission when I return, the company wouldn't give me a 'salary' for that day.  Like @araziza said it would more be a favour. I am really excited to get this business but this client has sucked a lot out of me over the past couple years.  And no I will be back to work before his first birthday :(

  • I've gone in a few times during my leave for various meetings. I don't expect compensation, it's more to show my commitment and I know it will be recognized at bonus/salary review time. My first day back officially is on LO's birthday so I took that day off as a holiday :)
  • If it was legal, I would. But I was always looking for a project when I was on my leave (which is why Tyler's bedroom is 95% DIY)...

  • I would do it if you can.  It doesn't seem like a terrible inconvenience, and might be nice to get back into work mode a little bit before you start back full time.

  • I work with the government and I know I am not allowed to go to work for even an hour until I actually return. But, I guess that's the difference in government and non government jobs.

  • Haha I don't work for "that" government @No longer the best‌, I work for provincial..... Plus it's child protection. I could care less if you go to work everyday as long as you aren't leaving your kid home alone :)

I didn't read all the responses... But I know that with canadian mat leave/EI you can earn a certain percentage of what you receive from the government before it affects your mat leave earnings. If it was me I'd go to the meeting.
