Walking....

So I just started walking at the park after 28 weeks of inactivity. I noticed my feet are so swollen so I figured walking could help. so far I have gone two days about 2.5 miles each day and I feel fine, just wondering of anyone has any advice on the level of activity I can safely take on after being inactive all of these months. I am afraid to overdo it or make baby uncomfortable.

  • I agree, walking is great, just listen to your body, stay hydrated, and don't over do it.

Before getting pregnant  I lost 50 lbs with diet and walking (usually 5 to 7 miles at a time several times a week).  However, since getting pregnant I've been mainly inactive (due to fatigue, migraines, etc.).  I really want to start walking again and my OB and cardiologist are encouraging it.  They are mainly concerned with the heat (I'm in Texas) and dehydration.

  • Yes my concernis the heat too. July will be a long hot month for us, I hope I can keep up :)
  • Make sure that you are really hydrated and listen to your body, especially as it gets warmer. If you're tired or hot, quit early. Walking is great for you, but not if you are risking dehydration or heat stroke.

I walk daily, too. But I wilt like an ice cube in the heat, so I'm not sure how long that will last. I'm already having problems with swelling on my feet. My shoes get so tight they are painful. I actually had to pull over and take my shoes off while driving the other day (and then I got pulled over for a burned out tail light...).

  • I'm in the same situation, 28 weeks of being pretty inactive and now starting a walking routine (dumb since it's gonna get real hot real soon here in Calibut better than nothing!!) I'm getting a belly support band first and thinking of adding some prenatal yoga and/or pilates a couple times a week too for days I can't make it out. Good luck to you!!

  • I went to school for Human and Sport Physiology. I didn't emphasize in pregnancy or anything, so don't take my advice to be perfect!

But I think you're doing great. If you feel fine, don't change a thing. You may notice some muscle soreness and even some increased swelling in your feet, ankles, and hands over the next few weeks/days as your body adjusts to the change in your routine. But only if the ankle swelling would become extreme and/or painful would I worry. Or, as always, if you notice a change in baby's movement patterns or any spotting definitely talk to your doctor to see if you're overdoing it.
But my "professional" opinion is if you're just walking that you should be fine! I'd advise against any more dramatic changes until your body has adjusted to the new workout regime. Maybe stick to your 2.5 miles/day for a week, then work up to three miles for a week, 3.5 miles the next, etc until you're at a time/distance you're happy with.

Keep it up! Baby loves the movement!
