Transition to toddler bed and traveling - WWJ12D?

Who has transitioned to the toddler bed and has subsequently traveled?  What did you do for the trip?  How did it work?

My family just asked us to go with them in about 6 weeks to the beach.  Aside from feeling like that's probably waaaaaaaaay too much time with my mom, we're also planning on moving DS into a toddler bed Memorial Day weekend - about 3 weeks before the trip.  He's starting to show interest in climbing out of the crib, and I really would rather be proactive than reactive with the move to the bed.  I'm worried about how it would work on vacation taking a toddler newly in a bed to a new environment with all his cousins he loves to be with, and trying to get and keep him in bed.  We couldn't go back to a PNP for the trip - he's too big for it at this point.

Honestly, my inclination is to not go for a list of reasons too long to go into here, but mostly because of this issue.  I kind of feel like if it was later in the summer it wouldn't be a big deal, he'd have the bed down cold.  What says J12?

  • IF you really wanted to go you could get a travel cot or something like that. And practice napping on it before you leave.

Um maybe Em is a randomly weird case but I don't think it would phase her to go from her toddler bed to a pnp on vacation. I think she associates her bed and her room with home and whatever other non routine stuff with not being home kwim? I thought she was going to have a hard time when we stayed at the hotel, but she had zero problems going to and staying asleep. It helped that she was tired from being out and about all day. We went to he beach too.

  • @VanessaLC - I did that with the PNP before traveling, but I hadn't planned on getting a travel cot - not really something I'd thought about yet.  I'm not sure we need one?

@zpanjwani - Frankly, it's because I feel like I need an extra set of hands during sleep times to pull this off and that's the soonest long weekend we have.  In the morning, he likes to roll around in his crib until he's ready to get up, so I just take DS2 in there to nurse until he's ready.  A few times in the last week, he's decided he wants to try to get up while I'm nursing and throws his leg up on the top crib rail.  I know with a little more practice he could easily do it.  I've adjusted my schedule in the meantime to accommodate him until DH and I have some time to really focus on training him to stay in the bed.

@nesenotes - we had issues with crib to PNP transition when we have traveled before, so I have done the "practice" in a PNP.
  • We rented a roll away bed when we traveled a month ago. It is low to the ground like her toddler bed.
