Any experiences with renting a hospital grade pump?

I had a really hard time BFing/pumping with DS 1 and wondered if renting a better pump might be worth it. I'm going for it again with DD, and want to be as prepared as possible. I've already talked to an LC that will come to my house after baby to help with any problems, as opposed to calling the ones at the hospital, which didn't prove to be too helpful last time.

Thanks in advance!

  • I had one with my 2nd baby because he spent a month in NICU. It cost $65/month and was AWESOME!! I'm hoping to be able to do it again when this one comes.

  • Does your health insurance cover the cost of a pump? If so, they usually have you order from a medical supply company and most of the options are close to hospital grade.

  • I rented one last time and I was happy with it. Once my supply was more established I returned it and just bought a small handheld single electric pump to have on hand.

It was $55 or $65 a month depending on the model I chose. One thing I wish I did was try and use the pump at the hospital so I got my own kit, the hospital and the place I rented from both had Medelas. I had to purchase the kit from the medical supply place myself where it would have just been tacked on to my hospital bill and maybe my insurance would have paid for it.

  • I didn't notice a difference between the one I used in the hospital (my insurance did pay for the kit) and my PISA I used at home. If you are in the hospital long enough for your milk to come in, I would try it out and see if it's worth it. I think most LCs have hospital grade pumps at their office, you could probably try it out and decide that way, also. :)

  • I pumped for the first 5 weeks with a Medela Symphony and it worked amazingly well. Most days I was able to pump over 20 oz on top of BF. Once my supply was established I used a Medela manual as needed.
