Freaking Out about measurements *SS*

So I just had a 37 week U/S to check measurements & weight because the doc thought he maybe big (DH is 6'4 & I am 5'2). The u/s tech said that he was measuring 33-35 weeks!

I am officially freaked out wondering if there is something wrong or something I should have been doing differently. I have called the OB & am waiting for a return call...... but has anyone experienced something like this? Should I be concerned? need some peace of mind.

Re: Freaking Out about measurements *SS*

  • I wouldn't be concerned, the u/s measurements can be off by a couple weeks.
  • Loading the player...
  • U/S measurements can be way off, and I'd look less at how big you and your hubby are now and look at how big you were as babies.  Maybe you just make peanut babies.

    CSC arrived 5/7/12

    CHC arrived 6/2/14

  • Thanks ladies. I agree @KrystaJ‌...I don't think the tech should have said anything, I think it is unprofessional & irresponsible....This is how the convo went:

Tech: the leg & arm measurements are approximately 33 weeks & total measurement is 33-35

Me: is it normal to be off by that much? Is that ok?

Tech: your doctor will have to explain it to you.

What! Seriously! Then why the F did you say something in the first place!

@ElTrain5‌ : I think it was more the fact that I was measuring ahead (fundal) & I am all baby...probably because I have a really short torso.....not much room to begin with.

I was told something similar a few weeks ago and when I talked to my Dr she said everything looked great. I had to have another U/S last week for others reasons and the baby's measurements were right on track.:)
  • My baby has been measuring 2-3 weeks ahead for a while. Those measurements aren't exact so I wouldn't worry.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Girl, don't worry. I'm having a monster baby that measures 3 weeks ahead of schedule. And guess what? He's an IVF baby so we know EXACTLY that he's 34 weeks and not 37. He's just a big boy right now. We've been told that growth may slow down in the next few weeks. Doc said there's nothing we are doing "wrong", as long as I'm eating and feeling well. Some babies are just smaller/bigger. I'm getting ready to punch someone because I constantly hear "oh! Twins?!" or "ready to pop?!". No jerks, I'm having a fat baby!

I feel you! I wish I was clever and witty so I could have a good come back.

My doctor said that there is a 2 poind error rate on Growth ultrasounds. I wouldn't worry, OP.

  • I'm the opposite, measuring ahead. Just had a 36 week ultrasound and they are guessing the weight to be about 7.5 lbs and exactly a week ahead (my first was 7lbs 11 oz. full term). um, yikes! Anyway, my midwife and doctor have explained to me with my two growth checks that these are not necessarily accurate and can be off by up to 2 weeks either way. At my last one my midwife explained further that she could probably make just as accurate of a guess by feeling baby with her hands and the ultrasound is more to check on fluid etc. I would not be concerned until you talk to the doctor. In another thread someone compared these growth checks to guessing someone's height and weight from across the room. And shame on that tech for saying anything too! That is not her job. Cross your fingers your little one doesn't get huge ;) as long as her body is fully developed, smaller is better for your vah jay jay! Hope you hear from your doctor soon.
  • Yeah at 23 weeks my baby was 1.5lbs and measuring in the 41%. At 36 weeks his head and tummy were measuring at 38 weeks and he looked to be around 7lb3oz. Big baby is all but measurements could be off. That being said, there is truth to the fetal weight matching the mother's. My bf is 6ft tall and I'm 5'7 but at 40 weeks he was

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Our growth scans give a range of +/- 10 ounces.

  • @LadyMacaron‌ I am exactly in the same boat as you. At 34 weeks we were measuring 38 weeks and tech said baby was already weighing in at 7.8 pounds. Our baby boy is also IVF so we know the exact date the pregnancy began. We are 36 weeks and have an ultrasound Friday to see where he's at now. If I hear 'twins?' one more time.....

@TheMrs820‌, I'm sorry the tech scared you but if it puts your mind at ease, as other posters said, these measurements can be way off. A friend of mine had a baby girl in January and according to the ultrasound she was barely 5 pounds but ended up weighing 7.2. And another friend was told her baby was be over 10 pounds at her final ultrasound and he was 7.8 at birth so as long as all the vitals look good, you should be fine. I think the measurements are really a guessing game.
