Any tips on how to make drop offs easier for Dd?

I joined a gym a month ago, but drop offs are still REALLY difficult for Dd. She cries the whole time and I've yet to have a workout where they don't call me over the loud speaker to come get her. Today she only lasted 20 mins before they called me back. Anyone have any advice?

  • Do you linger when you drop her off?

  • I do a routine with the boys - biiiig hug, kiss, high five, pat on the bum. I also say "mommies always come back" thanks to Daniel Tiger :)

    or bribery, bribery works too

So that's where he got that! My kid says this to me a couple times a week, but I never knew where he got it. They must watch Daniel Tiger in the mornings before their daily routine starts.

  • I definitely don't linger. I walk in, place her near a toy or a kid her age, she screams, I bolt with an apologetic look at the childcare person. Today she was HYSTERICAL when I came back. I was gone 20 mins

  • Ds is the exact opposite. He doesn't even kiss me good bye- he just runs in and starts playing/making friends.

  • Have you tried talking through what is going to happen with the drop off? That helped DS1 when he was having issues with drop offs. We would talk through the routine and what we were going to do when he went into daycare. That seemed to help. We would also come up with something to tell the teacher about (e.g., something fun we did that weekend, etc.). Then he would get excited about sharing that story.

  • Can't see tickers - how old is dd? Can she be distracted with snacks?

  • Does your LO have a friend who's mom would be interested in going to the gym with you? I sometimes go with DS's best friend's mom and they love being there together

  • DS is a stage 5 clinger when I drop him off anywhere.  MH can drop him off with a quick hug & wave goodbye, but not me.  I always make sure to tell him "Momma will be back to get you right after work" or whatever.  He is not one to be distracted with toys or food, so thats really the only thing that helps.  He has stopped the uncontrollable crying but stand there with THE MOST pitiful face.  I hate it, but it is a necessary evil!
  • Thanks all. She'll be 16mos next week. She is very much a baby still- not walking, few words, etc. so I'm not sure how much she'll get if I try to explain things. But I'll definitely try that route. I also use Danial Tiger's Momomas come back :)

She has no problems with strangers holding her, or being babysat by grandma, neighbor or whoever. It's just the gym where she freaks the eff out :(

Is it loud where she is? At our gym, I'm pretty sure that you can hear basketballs bouncing, people yelling, the spin class going on in the next room from the daycare area. It's just normal gym noise, but I can see how it might would be a little scary to a kid.

  • I find leaving a snack or bottle always helps.

  • 16 mo is a high separation anxiety age, especially if she's used to having you all day.

Time of day may help, as might a snack bribe immediately prior, although she may be a bit young to truly bribe.

-My son was born in April 2012. He pretty much rules.
  • She won't take a bottle and is still BFd, but I will definitely stop and give her a happy snack before drop off and after pick up as "reward" of sorts. Thanks guys!
