DD has a SEVERE diaper rash anytime she has fruit, even if it's the smallest amount. We took her to an allergist who said she's not allergic because she doesn't get hives. So why on earth does she get such severe diaper rashes. By severe I mean it will literally tear her butt up into sores within a couple minutes. I watch and wait for her poops to quickly wash after she has had fruit and it's never fast enough, it just destroys her butt almost instantly. So now we are avoiding all fruit, but I know that can't be the only solution. Anyone else have this problem, please tell me I'm not the only one...
Re: Fruit allergy???
Seems unlikely a child can be allergic to a whole food group. What fruits do you feed. What fruits does she react to. As others said I would look at the acidity of the fruits you are serving. Does she react to the banana, melons and mild fruits? Some children just have really, really sensitive and thin skin so the acid in the stools could be breaking it down very quickly. Find a good barrier cream to use to reduce contact.
Fruit is full of fibre and fibre makes kids poop more. Is it possible that it's not the fruit but it's the poop? If you stop all fruit when she poops is there any reaction at all? Perhaps milder since there may be less poop, less often?
What if you cut fruit but give other high fibre food?
Seems baffling but my friend is allergic to cold. Yep, cold. She instantly swells up (big time) if she drinks something cold, eats something cold, or goes outside in the cold. Diagnosed allergy to the cold. Who'd have thought. Perhaps your child is allergic to 'fruit' but it still seems more likely there is some aspect of fruit that is causing the symptoms rather than the greater 'fruit' title!
Also, allergy to certain fruits such as banana and kiwi often indicate an allergy to latex. I'm fortunately not allergic to latex. But it is something to watch for if u think your LO may have a true allergy. Even if LO has done ok with latex in the past, an allergy is formed after repeat exposure so I would still keep an eye out for it.
