backpack baby carriers

Backpack baby carriers...what do you think of these? Which ones are good? Online I've seen the Boba, Tula, Bjorn, Ergo and the Infantino(I think). Are the cheaper ones as good as the expensive ones for back carrying? I know it's a big difference for front carrying. I'm not looking to carry her on a regular basis but there are times when it would be less bulky/easier than a stroller. What features should I look for in these? I'm really not big on wraps, I just drown in the material and look like a drunk mummy....but I know a lot of people like them.

I'm going to a baby carrying event this weekend and thought this would be a fun discussion.

Re: backpack baby carriers

  • We have an Ergo that my husband uses for back carriers.  I'm still working on mastering my back wrapping skills, love my wrap but still don't feel confident putting him back there.

The Ergo works well for us.  I know a lot of mommies on here love their Tulas as well.

  • I have the ergo and I've used it to back carry. I did it yesterday actually when he was being fussy and I had to make dinner.

  • I have an Ergo and like it. We've used it for back carries for walks, cleaning, unpacking when we moved...as long as he can see out, he's happy. If I had it to do again, I would get a Tula, but I got a steal of a deal on the Ergo

  • We only use a back carrier when hiking, which is I think a totally diff category than you mean. But in that case, you get what you pay for. We tried an inexpensive one but hated it so ended up with a kelty. Which we've been very pleased with. Otherwise we just front carry with either a moby or baby bjorn

We hiked before the baby so it's not out of the question. She has grown out of the bjorn, I have an awesome babasling(joovy) but don't use it much bc I just set her down most of the time. Front carrying doesn't help me bc I am very short and don't have much of an arm span. :(

I'm tempted to buy one but want to wait until after the baby carrying event where I can try some on.

  • I have a Kinderpack. I love it. I had an Ergo before, but it got too hot. The Kinderpack has a mesh panel (optional feature) to keep the baby cool.

  • We have a Tula and love it. It is good for larger LOs as it has a tall panel. We both get really hot when I wear him for a long time. If you live somewhere warm, you may want to look for a carrier that is lighter or made with a mesh panel.

For anyone with an Ergo, I found this video on an easier and more secure way to position a child for the back carry without assistance:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jUZMK0D2As

I haven't tried it yet, but she makes it look much easier IMO.

We have the Ergo and Bjorn, but have only done front carries so far.  My husband prefers to wear the Bjorn (it's the version with the extra back support) - he's a tall big guy and the Bjorn just fits him more comfortably.  I'm more comfortable carrying LO in the Ergo.  LO likes both but I think he prefers the Bjorn because he gets to have an unobstructed view.  The newest model Ergo allows for forward facing though, so that's no longer an issue with that carrier.

  • Our Ergo is on Baby #2 and I still love it. I used it with DD1 until I got pregnant with DD2.

DH isn't as comfortable with back carries, but he hasn't exactly practiced, either.
