Trouble TTC

Intro

Hey Ladies,

I am new to this board.  Hubby and I have been TTC for a year and a half now.  My OBGYN diagnosed me with PCOS about 6 months ago.  At first we tried fertility medications through her, but no luck.  Last week I finally went to a RE and have started all the tests through that office.  My hubby goes in on Friday for the semen analysis which he is very nervous about.  Any one else had a nervous hubby for that test?  What tips do you all have to help make it easier for him?  I had all my blood work done last week.  Boy was that a lot of blood they had to take out!  Now I am waiting on AF to start so I can schedule my HSG test.  I have no idea what to expect from that and I am a bit nervous.  What tips do you all have for that?

Anyway, Just wanted to introduce myself.  I am looking forward to joining you all on this journey of TTC and some of the troubles it can cause for some women.  Some months are easier than others, but it is nice to know that there are others out there that I can "talk" to on the not so easy days.

Thanks!

Re: Intro

  • Welcome, I hope that things will go really smoothly for you now that you're working wtih an RE!

No great advice on nervous DHs...mine was fine about the first SA, a little unhappy about the second, and this third time he was super nervous/stressed for more than a day over it. I'm trying to get him relaxed about the next time because it will hopefully be for IUI instead of just testing, meaning that it will be directly trying to make a baby - but so far that idea hasn't really reduced his stress over it! I also try to constantly admire him and remind him how manly he is, Lol!

The HSG might go really smooth/easy, but it might take a few painful tries to angle the catheter in (as happened to me last week), or the dye injection might cause pain for a few moments or longer. I'd definitely take some pain killer (whatever you take for period cramps, if you get them) and prepare yourself mentally in case it goes a little longer than you had imagined, but I can attest that it does end pretty quickly! Afterward I just had mild, painless pre-AF type cramps off and on.

  • Welcome and Good luck!

My husband didn't have a problem with the SA so I'm no help there. As far as the HSG I had no issues with it either. I think I took ibuprofen before but I do remember leaking stuff the rest of the day, bring a pad. I also spotted the rest of that cycle on and off and I ovulated later than I normally do.
    Fucking bump!!!!

Welcome :) The initial testing is overwhelming, but hopefully you will get some answers from it.  My DH was super nervous about the SA.  I'm not sure how far the office is from you, but you can see if they will let him "collect" the specimen at home and bring it in.  That's what we did and he felt much better about it.  I didn't have an HSG so no help there.  Good luck with everything!

    Welcome to the board!!

My DH was really nervous about his first SA too. I think I just told him to suck it haha, not very helpful of course. He had to take his in the hospital the first two times, and he liked it when he had the 3rd at a clinic because it was much smaller and private.

(And don't tell him that he may need to go again depending on the results, haha).

  • Welcome! DH was a little nervous about the SA but honestly I was unsympathetic, so I do not have any tips. He was able to do his collection at home, so seriously it's not like this is something he never does anyways, he just has to make it into a cup, lol. I was seriously agitated when he was being a baby about it, I was like dude they are going to be all up in my business and shooting me up with dye and it's going to hurt, get over it. I'd probably be more sympathetic if he had to do on-site collection as I could see that as being nerve wracking and awkward but collection in the privacy of your own home, nope. We also already had my dx, so we knew it was likely that his SA would be just fine and shouldn't be nervous, and it was fine. After the initial SA he has been fine for the IUIs. I did not have a pleasant experience with the HSG, I had taken two tylenol an hour before and it hurt when they shot the dye, took my breathe away. Luckily the pain is short-lived, it really was no longer then a hot minute. I had minimal cramping the rest of the day and I did not have any spotting or leakage. Good luck!

  • Welcome! My DH was really nervous too. The first one he did at home and we drove it in. The ones for IUI's have been in the doctors office, which he rushes. This time my DH will  "practice" at home one night, the week of our IUI lol. It sounds stupid, but he mentioned how he missed the cup like twice. We have't had an IUI lately, so hopefully it will help w/ our next one.  It does get easier for him I promise! Good luck!

  • Welcome! I think you will find a lot of great support on this board : ) for your husbands SA is he able to do it at home and then take it to the office within a certain about of time? That might ease some of the pressure he is feeling. For my HSG test the procedure was uncomfortable but I felt instant relief once they took everything out and deflated the balloon. I was however extremely sore for two days on my left side but Found out that was because I have small and a potentially damaged left tube. Each one responds differently so I wish you the lots of luck for an easy test!

Trying to have baby #1 since April 2013

DH SA March,May 2014 - Low motility and shape issues. On vitamins per RE to help

Me testing April 3, 2014 - FSH and LH good, HSG showed blocked right tube

April 29, 2014 - First RE appt., right tube needs to be removed and possibly left also if

it's bad too. RE suggests going straight to IVF

June 4, 2014 - LAP/HSC and unexpected endo. removed but tubes got to stay!

June 13, 2014 - Post-Op appointment. We decide where to go next since main issue

is MFI influenced. Trying naturally until decision... Repeat SA  in September. Aiming for IUI #1 November 2014.

Hi :) Welcome, I am PCOS too!

My dude wasn't too phased by it but I went with him and waited in the lobby, which actually might make it MORE awkward so not sure if thats helpful. At the end of the day though I was like, you shoud not be nervous, this is easy, they are shoving things inside me and taking my blood left and right and more people have seen my vag then I could EVER have anticipated, so man up, lol.

I had my HSG on Wednesday actually. It hurt a lot for me (cramping) but only for like, a minute probably. Afterwards it was nothing, I'd think of it like getting a shot or a blood draw. Painful but just for a sec.

    Good luck!
