Infant seat without base?

I'm going to be flying in a few weeks with the baby and it just occurred to me that I don't know how I'd get the carseat-with the base- through the airport, since the base doesn't click into the stroller.  I've seen multiple things online about how to secure this particular seat into a car without the base (so therefor leaving the base at home), but I can't help but think that doesn't really seem safe.  Has anyone used the infant carrier seat like this before?  Or, what do you do about the base if you brought it?  I was thinking I would carry the baby in the mai tai, check my suitcase, click the carseat into the stroller, and then put the base into the carseat and push the stroller through to gate check it.  Whew. That sounds so complicated.  

Also, does anyone have a car seat travel bag they recommend?  Thanks!

    We only had one base, so every time Cooper rode in H's car his carrier was seat belted in place.

    I think I used the base once. I didn't like the base so we just took it out. much more secure imo

    ok good to know, I feel much better about it!  I didn't check the manual (its in a drawer in Tucker's room and I don't DARE go in when he's sleeping :)) but I will look and see what it says.  I watched several youtube videos on how to install it so I will play around with it and see if I can get the hang of it :) Thanks!!

    I took the base with us each time I traveled with her. I carried her in the ergo, then put the car seat into the stroller and the base I just set into the car seat. It worked fine. When we got to the gate I attached the base to the car seat before I gate checked it.
