What are you reading??

It's been a while since we've talked about books, so lets hear it...what are you reading? What have you read recently that you really like?

And also because I'm curious, here's a book survey:

- What is your fav/main genre?
- Do you have a favorite author(s)?
- What genre(s) do you dislike?
- How many books do you typically read per year?
- What is your favorite classic book?

Currently reading Anathem by Neal Stephenson. It's taking me far too long to get through it, but that's because I'm too tired at night to get through anything more than just a few pages.

    - What is your fav/main genre?
I have a few. I particularly enjoy quantum based sci-fi stories and historical fiction. Oh, and smut. :)

    - Do you have a favorite author(s)?
Robert Sawyer, Margaret Atwood. I like them mainly for the content of their stories, but appreciate their writing styles as well.

    - What genre(s) do you dislike?
Not so much genres, but more topics. I can not read any books that involve child abuse.

    - How many books do you typically read per year?
This past year? Maybe 3. Generally, 6 or so.

    - What is your favorite classic book?
    Alice in Wonderland

I'm looking for a new book to read right now, but I did just read two series that I really enjoyed.  The first was the Blades of the Rose series by Zoe Archer, which was a steampunk/mild PNR/adventure series.  Then I read the Hearts of the Anemoi series by Laura Kaye, which was sort of PNR/gods.

    - What is your fav/main genre?
I read pretty much every subgenre of romance, less the really sappy stuff.  I like PNR, smut, historical, contemporary, etc.

    - Do you have a favorite author(s)?
Kristen Ashley and Karen Marie Moning

    - What genre(s) do you dislike?
I'm not a fan of mushy/sad stuff.  I read for entertainment, and depressing topics just aren't entertaining to me.  I prefer my books to have a HEA.

    - How many books do you typically read per year?
I just started really reading again when my DH bought me a Kindle for Christmas a few years ago, but I devour books now and read close to 200 new books per year.  I'm also a HUGE re-reader, so if I counted those, that number would be closer to 300.  I obviously anticipate this will change drastically once LO gets here.

    - What is your favorite classic book?
It's a toss up between Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. It's kind of heart breaking.

    - What is your fav/main genre? That big broad genre 'literature'. I tend to love well-written books focused on a culture that is not my own these days. Like Mistry's India.

    - Do you have a favorite author(s)? Marisha Pessl. She's only written two books, but her first was so good, I was ridiculously excited for her second. But mostly, no, no favourite authors. I read whatever I can get my hands on for free (aka, library, ARCs, free book piles in front of my neighbours' houses, etc.)

    - What genre(s) do you dislike? If it's well-written, I love it. That said, I tend to avoid books that are really popular (think Twilight, 50 Shades, Divergent, etc.) unless I've heard from friends I trust that they're good. I'm sorry to those that like these books, but I find books that the majority of the world goes crazy for tend to be very focused on story, and not focused enough on style and language, which are huge for me in the books I read.

(That said, while Twilight and 50 Shades will be forever off the table, I have heard the Divergent series might be worth it.)

    - How many books do you typically read per year? 2012 - 20. 2013 - 36. 2014 - a measly 4 so far. I track my reading on Goodreads. One year, I'll hit 50 books for the year. Hopefully. Maybe.

    - What is your favorite classic book? I always blank when people ask me what my favourite books are. Perhaps Dracula? It was the first vampire book I ever read that really instilled the proper fear of vampires in me. Vampires are supposed to be terrifying! Also, I'm kind of looking forward to reading LO The Princess and the Goblin in a few years!

Currently rereading "Ever After" by Kim Harrison. I just got her newest book "The Undead Pool" and I need to refresh my memory before I read it.

Fav genre: I like paranormal fiction (not necessarily paranormal "romance" which most books seem to be categorized as.) Anything with witches, vampires, werewolves, fairies, demons, etc.

Genre dislike: anything boring or that I can't relate to... I don't want to read about politics or mathematics and I have trouble reading books where I can't pronounce the characters names.

Fav authors: Kim Harrison, Ilona Andrews and Kelley Armstrong

Books read per year: It usually works out to be a book a day, sometimes every other day. So anywhere from 150-300 per year.

Fav classic: pride and prejudice by Jane Austen

  • Sorry I am double posting but I just noticed this post and got really excited. Books are on the list of my 5 top favorite things ever ( I am an English Teacher for a reason)

what are you reading? What have you read recently that you really like? I am not currently reading anything as I just finished "The Book Thief" and I cannot fathom starting something else. That book affected me in a huge way and is now one of my top 10 favorite books EVER and that's saying something. Oh, and I finished one before that called "Broken Silence" by Natasha something or another. Free on my nook :) but unbelievably awesome

And also because I'm curious, here's a book survey:

    - What is your fav/main genre? just about anything, I read a lot of teen lit because of teaching middle/high school I like to know things to buy to put on my book shelf
    - Do you have a favorite author(s)- Love Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club), Emily Giffith, and probably a dozen more I can't think of. I beta read for an author named Jamie Magee and while she writes teen lit, the books are so good and easy reads that you can zone out and just enjoy the story. Plus the first one is free on kindle/nook "Insight"
    - What genre(s) do you dislike? fantasy. not a big fan of stuff like "The Hobbit" or "Lord of the Rings"
    - How many books do you typically read per year? oh lord, probably close to 150 last year
    - What is your favorite classic book? "The Great Gatsby" or "Jane Eyre" Gatsby is my favorite thing to teach too :)

  • It's been a while since we've talked about books, so lets hear it...what are you reading? Currently reading Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell and Dune by Frank Herbert.  I am about to start Fun Home by Alison Bechdel (re-read), A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron, and The Walking Dead Compendium One by Robert Kirkman.  Perhaps I can finish before baby?

What have you read recently that you really like?  I loved American Gods by Neil Geiman.

    - What is your fav/main genre? I like a lot of different fiction.  I am embarrassingly a sucker for teen dystopian.  Please don't judge.
    - Do you have a favorite author(s)?  Kurt Vonnegut ALL DAY!
    - What genre(s) do you dislike?  I have a hard time with non-fiction, I always get 1/2-3/4 of the way through and am like "I get it" and never finish.  And I *hate* romance.
    - How many books do you typically read per year?  Depends, 30-50?
    - What is your favorite classic book?  Oh crap, this is hard.  Probably The Awakening by Kate Chopin.

  • what are you reading? What have you read recently that you really like?
I am currently reading An Italian Romance by Ann Radcliffe - a gothic romance classic

And also because I'm curious, here's a book survey:

    - What is your fav/main genre?
I typically only read books written before the early 1900s. I love the classics and own a ton of them. I have read some newer books that I really like but once again they are typically set in the Victorian Era or earlier. Two of my recent favorites were The Thirteenth Tale and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.  I always tell DH my favorite books are the ones that make me forget I'm reading.
    - Do you have a favorite author(s)?
My favorite author is Agatha Christie - I own every book she has ever written.
    - What genre(s) do you dislike?
I typically don't like mindless books, I want something that will make me think, have a twist in it, or is set in an era/time/world that isn't the present.
    - How many books do you typically read per year?
I typically read between 50 and 100 books a year, it really depends, especially because some books can take me awhile to read and others I fly through.
    - What is your favorite classic book?
I don't think I can pick a favorite but a few at the top are: Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Bleak House (by Dickens), Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia Series. I already have TONS of books that I am planning on reading to LO.

@jennyd321 I got the Book Thief for Christmas and read it in just a few days. It was amazing. I just told DH last night that I still miss that book and wish it wasn't over yet.

  • We have so many books at home that we were having trouble keeping track of what we owned.  The priest who married us recommended Library Thing, which I've found so useful for tracking our books and getting new recommendations.

What are you reading? What have you read recently that you really like?
Currently I'm reading The Happiest Baby on the Block... I may finish before LO arrives, but I usually fall asleep while reading it.  I recently read The Sheen on the Silk and Major Pettigrew's Last Stand and really liked both.

What is your fav/main genre? Historical and mysteries.  I reread classic literature a lot, and I also read a fair amount of non-fiction, usually about art or history.

Do you have a favorite author(s)?  Hmm, I don't know.  Carola Dunn, Gerald Durrell, and Michael Ondaatje are some that come to mind.

What genre(s) do you dislike?  Fantasy.  I did enjoy the Harry Potter series, but in general I find fantasy tough because you have to remember all the rules of another world, and I just don't.  I haven't read any straight romances, but I have a feeling that I wouldn't like them.

How many books do you typically read per year?  Not sure, maybe 20-30.  I actually read more when I worked because I had uninterrupted train time.

What is your favorite classic book?  Haji Murad, by Tolstoy.  I've also read most of Jane Austen's numerous times.

  • -What are you reading?
Currently reading The Bradley Method (personal) and Fat Land: How Americans Became the Fattest People In the World (school). Hope to add a fiction book in there once class ends next week. I just finished The Book Thief, which I saw some of you loved...I really wanted to but it just wasn't detailed or emotionally connecting for me. It's a decent read I guess, just not a fav.

-What have you read recently that you really like?
Before The Book Thief I read Looking for Alaska, which was somewhat depressing but actually made me feel a little better about the concept of death. The best book I have read recently was Silver Linings Playbook (yes, the one the movie was made from). Fantastic read.

    - What is your fav/main genre?
I love YA fiction, especially science fiction/fantasy. Followed by dystopic fiction. Followed by health/fitness and humor.

    - Do you have a favorite author(s)?
I love Christopher Moore. And I used to love Ted Dekker books, but he kinda sold out so not as much anymore. But there are a lot more than those two, they're just the ones I can think of who each wrote 3 books I greatly enjoy.

    - What genre(s) do you dislike?
Historical/religious nonfiction (which is DH's favorite genre so we've got the bases covered)
    Smut

    - How many books do you typically read per year?
I aim for at least one per month and can usually do two, so 24.

    - What is your favorite classic book?
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Because I just love depressing novels apparently.

Currently reading: 11/22/63 by Stephen King. Incredible so far. Favorites from the past year: All the Gillian Flynn books, Tell the Wolves I'm home (AMAZING!), NOS4A2 (in audio), Joyland...

    - What is your fav/main genre? contemporary fiction, crime fiction, thrillers/horror/mystery, and some YA...I like everything well written except for most romances and paranormal mysteries.

    - Do you have a favorite author(s)? Right now it's Gillian Flynn. I'm obsessed with her books and writing style. Big fan of Stephen King and Curtis Sittenfeld (sp?). John Green, but I do not get the hype behind The Fault in Our Stars, Alaska was WAY better.

    - What genre(s) do you dislike? Romance and erotic anything. I'm bored by sex scenes in books, so when that's the focus of the whole I spend the entire time rolling my eyes and skimming pages.

    - How many books do you typically read per year? About 65...Although this year I am incredibly behind on my 50 goal. Can't seem to focus.

    - What is your favorite classic book? Either Little Women or TKAM. Although the book I've read more times than I can count is Matilda by Roald Dahl, it helped me out of some tough times as a kid.

Currently reading King of Sword and Sky (Tairen Soul #3) by C.L. Wilson.

    - What is your fav/main genre?
I read all sorts of stuff, but definitely a lot of romance, YA and fantasy. Recently started getting into Steampunk.
    - Do you have a favorite author(s)?
I always have a hard time answering this, it changes so frequently.
    - What genre(s) do you dislike?
I read for enjoyment, so anything truly sad or disturbing is usually off the table. I also truly HATE poor writing/editing. The e-books in particular are sooo guilty of this.
    - How many books do you typically read per year?
Several hundred. I buy probably two dozen actual books a year, and then simply devour books on my Kindle at a frightening pace. I started & finished a 400 page book yesterday.
    - What is your favorite classic book?
Gone with the Wind, Dante's Inferno or just about any Shakespeare

  • I love to read but have had NO desire to while pregnant and if I try to read anything I just fall asleep. I hope my love of reading comes back after this baby exits.

I have tried to read the same book every summer since I was 18 (I am 31) and I finally finished it this last summer, I would say it was the best feeling ever but I hate that book so much! Every summer I start it all over again, I start the weekend of memorial day and have until labor day to finish it. I have lost the book, burned the book, thrown it overboard into Lake Michigan, I have spilled beverages on it, etc. so my husband bought me a kindle so I had to read it and couldn't destroy it. It is an ongoing joke of how far I will get each summer before I destroy it. So this last summer we had 4 weddings and did A LOT of traveling and I finally finished it. Anyways the book is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried to read that book once when I learned of an essay contest that goes with it and decided I was going to write an essay and win all the moneys. Yeah, didn't happen. I got maybe a third through. Maybe one day I'll try to read it again. Good for you for finishing it!

  • What are you reading? Currently reading (listening to on audible) The Fault in Our Stars - so many people recommended this to me but I just can't seem to connect to it - or finish it. Also reading The One from the Selection Series by Kiera Cass

What have you read recently that you really like? Just the other day I finished Breakable by Tammara Webber, which is an alternate point of view/prequel to the book Easy.

    - What is your fav/main genre?
Not sure I have a favorite, but lately I have been favoring ya and new/contemporary adult fiction. Though my current fav book series is historical fiction (All Souls Trilogy)

    - Do you have a favorite author(s)?
I love Deborah Harkness' books! (All Souls Trilogy), but don't particularly have an all time favorite author.

    - What genre(s) do you dislike?
I prefer fiction and really only read non-fiction if I have to or for learning purposes. I also don't really like fantasy, horror or super sci-fi kinds of things.

    - How many books do you typically read per year?
Well I have an audible account that I get one book per month, every so often I buy a second and I do a lot of re-reading. I'd probably buy more if I wasn't on a budget.

    - What is your favorite classic book?
I like Jane Austin and most Shakespeare.
  • I'm currently not reading any books... I usually read while DS is in bed but now sleep sounds more appealing lol I was reading Dean Koontz' Frankenstein series though. I've read 2 out of 5 books so far. I really wish I had the energy to continue the series but I don't :( maybe in a few months when we get onto a better schedule with the boys.

    - What is your fav/main genre?
    I love mystery/suspense

    - Do you have a favorite author(s)?
I really like Dean Koontz but i don't really have a fav

    - What genre(s) do you dislike?
It's really hard for me to get into books, so I basically only read mystery/suspense. They're the only types of books that can get me hooked.

    - How many books do you typically read per year?
    no idea. Not many unfortunately.

    - What is your favorite classic book?
Hmmm I can't think of one off the top of my head...
