Do your LOs use utensils?

Sorry in advance for poor formatting I'm on mobile.

Tonight I was face timing with my mom while DD was having dinner. Now that she eats real food I tend to cut it up and dump it on the high chair tray. My mom asked why she didn't have a fork. That question confused me. Are we at the point where we should be teaching them utensils? Am I setting her back behaviorally by letting her eat with her hands?

  • I give N@ a baby utensil when she eats foods that require utensils. You can tell she knows what to do, but really doesn't have the dexterity to use it appropriately.

I usually do the same as you- cut into small pieces and put on tray. When I'm feeling brave I'll give him a fork or spoon. He will stab his food with the fork or scoop with the spoon, but utensils usually become projectiles and end up on the floor. You're not hurting your LOs development. She will show interest when she's ready.

I am still working on getting A to eat. When the spoon or fork is empty she will put it in her mouth. Sometimes she will help guide a spoon of greek yogurt to her mouth or grab the spoon away to do it herself.

I am not concerned with teaching A about spoons or forks yet. There is plenty of time for that.
  • No utensils here. I usually just cut up the food and put it on a plate for him. He'll help guide his spoon to his mouth at breakfast, but he hands the spoon back to me to reload. I'm not worried. When he starts showing more interest, I'll start teaching him.

He puts them in his mouth and once in a while he puts food on it but it's never made it in his mouth from the utensils. Our guy is a grazer so utensils on make meals take longer but help to distract him when he's getting fussy but hasn't eaten much.

  • My LO is 1 on the 24th. I've been giving him a spoon or fork for awhile. However, he is not using them to eat. He will hold it forever and then eat his food with the other hand. He eats everything/anything we are having. If it's something he can't finger feed himself like yogurt, I will give him a spoon to hold and feed him the yogurt. If I try to guide the spoon with yogurt on the spoon and him holding it, he will fling it. He hates being "controlled" in any way and wants to be so independent but does not have the dexterity yet to do any feeding with the utensil. I think it will come with time and each baby will do that skill as they are ready. For example, my friends 18 month old daughter could blow her own nose but I've met 10 year olds who still won't blow their nose. It's crazy how kids develop! I've had some side eyes from ppl in restaurants. (We try to keep the finger foods on his tray or table but no sorry people my 11.5 month old is not using a fork!) (not you-the ppl who side eye) :) wow, sorry mobile bumping so not sure what a huge run on this may be.

  • Same as most here. I give her the spoon and she mostly uses it as a toy. Once in a while she'll try to feed herself with it but is unsuccessful. At this point she knows her hands will feed her quicker lol

Thanks ladies.  DD is pretty much the same, but my mom made it seem like I was way behind or something. Phew.

R insists on forks and spoons and doing it himself. Everytime he gets a piece in his mouth he looks at me like "Nailed it!" image
  • DS can dip the spoon into his yogurt and then put the spoon in his mouth. But I don't let him do it all bc I can only handle so much of a mess. Maybe I will work on using a fork with less messy foods.

I also just bought self feeding spoons and "forks" to use bc he was using the long handled spoons and it made it somewhat hard to put the spoon in his mouth.

DD refuses to eat without a spoon in her hand. She generally has a spoon in one hand and eats with the other. Makes for quite the mess but is super cute.

LO likes to hold it, wave it around, sometimes gets food on it, *tries* to get the food in his mouth (a rarity). But last night he shoved the spoon so far in his mouth that he puked up his whole meal. So we are laying low with the spoons unless Mommy is holding it and feeding him with it ;)
