Anyone else currently dealing with Nighttime seperation anxiety?

Colin has been in daycare FT since 9 weeks and has been great with the occasional sitter, so we've never noticed any other symptoms.   He's been STTN since roughly 9mos and is now about 13.5 mo.  Within the past few weeks though, he's been harder to put down, clinging to our necks for dear life and waking up a few times a night screaming.  When it first began a few weeks ago, he wouldn't open his eyes and was screaming his head off.  My husband had been opting to bring him into bed with us, which I told him I really didn't want to get in the habit of doing.  So last night, we were exhausted and of course, I caved despite my stance on the issue.  Now, I suppose he could also be teething or perhaps nightmares, but we both suspect SA.

For those of you that have dealt with SA at night, how did you deal?  What worked best?  I've read a few things about trying to go comfort them, keeping it brief and then leaving.  Trouble is, I find that pretty hard to do that when your LO is still screaming.  We did commit to letting him CIO around 9 mos to get him sleeping through the night, but since we're concerned this could be Separation Anxiety, we don't want to do that again just yet since we fear it could make matters worse.

Any advice would be great!  TIA!

  • Every time my son went through teething, he developed separation anxiety at night.  The worst time was during his molars (about your son's age).  He doesn't have trouble going down at night, but that's b/c DH is the one who puts him down. If I do it, he'll cry for an hour even if I do Ferber checks.  He STTN but during teething, he wakes up 1x or 2x a night screaming his head off.  Some nights he could soothe himself and go back to sleep.  Other times DH will go soothe him (he sings to DS) and DS will go back to sleep.  Does NOT work if I go in - DS only gets separation anxiety when he sees me - so DH has been the one who gets up MOTN.

Having said that, during the molars, there were several nights DS kept waking up crying despite DH going in to soothe him.  Those nights either DH or me ended up sleeping on the couch in his room.  Luckily it only happened a few times.

  • DS was really clingy during teething, and wouldn't you know it, DD (19 mos) had an issue tonight like this.  She's never had issues sleeping.  She's been STTN since she was 4 weeks old (I'm talking 12 hours, here!) and we've never had a real issue putting her down to bed.  But she's getting her 2 year molars now and she screamed for me when I put her to bed. :[ :[  It was awful!  She's never done that.
Hopefully your LO is teething, too, and it passes easily and quickly!
