I woke up Tuesday morning with a sharp stabby pain in the left side of my back. I was pretty certain it wasn't contractions, but couldn't really breathe through it either, so I called the on call doctor. They had me come into L&D just to check it out. We got in the car and didn't even bother with the hospital bag (because we are first time parents and still in partial denial). We got to the hospital at about 5 am where they started the exam and determined it must be kidney stones. I've never had any kidney issue in my life! They said that it can happen with pregnancy even without prior history. So I spent all of Tuesday and Wednesday morning passing 2 kidney stones and some extra "sediment." As I was 38 weeks, I got to do so in the maternity ward with some extra awesome pain killers.
Wednesday morning after the first two stones passed, the doctor came on and let me know they've been watching the baby the whole time and that she had a few decelerations overnight during some contractions. And now they are not comfortable with me going into labor in my own, as they don't know how she will handle it. They informed us that the safest route at this point was to test her with some pitocin and if all goes well move forward with an induction. After taking a few minutes to comprehend what was said my poor husband fought morning traffic to rush home and get our bag. Fortunately she passed the test, so we started Cervadil. We had one more scare Wednesday night with a deceleration for about 5 minutes during a contraction I didn't even know I was having. They said she was OK, but will not tolerate more decelerations, so if she does it again we go for a c-sec. It is now Thursday morning and she made it perfectly fine through the night with consistent contractions, so we are moving forward with starting pitocin again. They said as long as she tolerates we will keep moving forward with Plan A, but at any point if she dips again, they're found to just take her out. If there was any reason to be thankful for kidney stones, this is certainly it. I hadn't been feeling contractions too much and would have never known she was getting stressed from them. FX plan A can still happen, but at this point plan B doesn't sound too bad either.
Update: I spent all of Thursday on pitocin and painful contractions every 2-3 mins only to make .5cm progress. They said it sometimes takes a few tries and not to be discouraged. We went with another Cervadil Thursday evening to see if that could help get things moving faster. Friday morning I was checked again and hadn't made any progress. She had one more quick decel earlier in the morning, so they were remaining firm that I would need to be monitored, even though she was perfect otherwise. We decided to break my water as the next step. After about an hour, contractions came hard and fast again. About 3 hours in l made it to 4cm and everything looked like it would finally be happening. Except that the doctor said she "shook hands" with the baby as her hand was now tested on top of her head. They did not want me to progress further if she was not going to move it, so I was allowed to labor for one more hour and rechecked. Instead of moving her hand, she moved her head to the side and was now trying to come out like Superman. At that point, they finally called it and she was delivered via emergency c-section at 7:50pm Friday evening after 4 full days in the hospital (including time for kidney stones). As they delivered, they found that she had been grasping her cord with that same hand. She was 7lb 10oz and 21in long. We are completely in love, and I would gladly go through it all over again for her.
Will attach photo later as mobile is being dumb.
