Exclusive Pumpers? Current & Retired

Hi all, I officially retired from exclusively pumping a few weeks ago when my LO turned 9 months. I have enough frozen milk to last awhile (or so I hope!), but suddenly my LO has been acting like he's starving after his normal bottles. Since 4 months, he's always eaten 5oz bottles 6 times a day, so 30oz a day. Sometimes he may eat more or less, but generally that's what he would do. Now he's fussy after his normal bottle and will continue to eat another 3oz easily (so 8oz total), but then still be hungry for his next bottle at the same time as usual. This has been lasting for more than a week, so I'm pretty sure it's not just a growth spurt. I'm just not sure what to make of it, since he had been rather consistent for almost five months and according to everything I read the amount of BM they need doesn't really shift over time (or at least not after the initial months). Any thoughts?

In short, has the amount of BM your baby drinks changed with time or been rather consistent? Thanks!

Not an exclusive pumper, I pump 3x day at work. But maybe try more solids?

With my LO at daycare he typically drinks the same amount but he has gone through phases that last about a week or so of wanting more milk (or sometimes less)

  • My experience with increasing bottles won't be helpful to you, but I do agree with @NKaeding said about fat content - if his shift in appetite coincided with switching to use older milk, that might be why.

Luke has just been super hungry lately though. We have to be cautious about volume of fluids, but I really think he would take bigger bottles if we'd let him - but since we're working with a finite amount of frozen milk at this point, and he's taking a normal amount, I'm trying to increase frequency and volume of solids instead so we can keep giving BM for as long as possible since increasing daily intake now would mean running out sooner.

Follow his lead if you can - you're not going to overfeed him. But maybe try playing around with some of these things - age of milk, amount of solids, spacing of solids throughout the day, etc. and see if anything makes a difference.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!

  • Agree with PP that it's probably the fat content.
  • Also, congrats on making it so long and on your newfound freedom :)

  • Thanks for your input.

We've always recycled through the old milk. So the milk he's getting now is no older than a few months (from end of January/beginning of February, so when he was about 6 months old). I guess I didn't really think about the fat content changing that much. Maybe I'll try and give some newer milk mixed with the older stuff...

We've tried increasing solids, but that really seems to make no difference. I feel like he eats a decent amount, at each meal he typically eats almost two containers of purees and then whatever veggies we're eating as well.
We haven't had much luck with water. We also can't quite figure out the sippy cup yet, so he generally just dumps the water all around. :)

Thanks. I think it may just be a phase, but usually his growth spurts last less than a week. I guess I just need some reassurance!

Thanks. I think I have this worry about overfeeding him, which is kind of funny since he's on the small side.

Thank you all for the reassurance. I guess maybe it's just a phase. I'll try and switch up the age of the milk also.

Also, what kind of of Purées are you feeding? Maybe try things with higher fat like avocado or yogurt?
  • We do lots of different purees. Usually yogurt and/or cereal for breakfast and veggies w/meat & fruit for lunch & dinner. I'll have to look into the fat content... He loves avocados. Maybe that would fill him up.
