Biophysical profile and NST

Has anyone here had these done? I had to do a 24 hour urine over the weekend and my OB just called and said the protein was high so she wants me to have these done every week. I have an ultrasound and an appointment right after on Thursday and she said we'll talk about it then. What is it??

Re: Biophysical profile and NST

  • I have a NST every week now. For mine they just hook me up to a monitor that records how baby's heartbeat and movements are doing. As well as if I have an contractions. I just lay in a recliner for 30 minutes. 45 minutes if she's sleeping and they have to use the baby buzzer on her.

That's what the nurses there call it so I'm not sure what it's real name is. It's the size of a tv remote and if the baby is sleeping they press it to my stomach and it vibrates really hard. It doesn't hurt just kind of tickles. It wakes the baby up though so they can see her movements and how her vital signs respond.

I go twice a week for the NST and every 3 weeks they do a biophysical. For the NST they want to see of the baby is moving and watch his heart rate. They also monitor any contractions. The biophysical they measure everything, check the heart rate, breathing, etc. They want to make sure everything with the baby is ok.
  • June mom, lurker here.  I just had my first NST last week and have to go back every week.  It was NBD.  I had to go the L&D at the hospital and they hooked me up to monitors that tracked the baby's heartbeat in response to his/her movements.  The monitoring was supposed to only take about 20 min. but my boy was uncooperative and I wound up being there for nearly 2 hours.  Apparently I should have had something to eat before, so this week I will definitely eat something.
  • For the past few weeks, my OB has been doing NSTs every Monday and my MFM has been doing ultrasounds every Thursday. Since their main concern is my preeclampsia, they also check my BP and test my urine at each visit.

I always make sure to eat now before my NST because the one time I didn't eat they kept me on the monitor for a long time because the baby was hardly moving.

  • I get them done at my OB weekly (NST not bio), it's just what PPs have said. Just make sure you eat something before you go. I reserve my iced coffee intake for Monday's to get her going for the test ;)

  • I have to go every Monday for an NST, and every Thursday I go for an NST, biophysical ultrasound, and my OB visit. This is week #3 of doing this for me. I'm 36w 2d, I'm medicated for my GD, other then that no problems. I had a growth ultrasound done with my biophysical 2 weeks ago and my baby was measuring in the 95th percentile at 6 1/2 lbs. NST's aren't too bad, but I recommend eating before hand, I'm not a big fan of the baby buzzer, it make my little guy jump and that is not comfortable!
  • I'm doing weekly NSTs because my amniotic fluid measured on the low side. Usually my baby is very active and I think they need to see a certain number of movements in twenty minutes. Once I went in the afternoon, which is LO's nap time and I was there for two hours while they waited for her to wake up. My hospital doesn't use the buzzer. It's NBD.

I do BPP and cord Dopplers on Tuesdays, and NST on Thursdays.  The BPP is an US that looks for baby's movement, tone, breathing practice, and fluid levels.  The NST traces baby's heart rate in response to contractions and movement.  Both are easy to do, I love to relax in the recliner or on the stretcher!

just like PP said, i go to NST twice a week and they are looking for movement.  i have to go for precautionary reasons because i had a positive AFP test and they dont know why. baby boy already tested negative for downs, so this is just some extra care for LO.  they also do a quick ultrasound checking my amniotic fluid levels.

its a good idea to eat beforehand, just dont eat too much sugar!  i ate a bunch of ice cream before one visit and he was actually moving around too much and they couldnt get a baseline.  the test is no big deal though and an excuse to relax in some A/C.  bring a book and relax :)

They do my BPP every Tuesday and NST every Friday due to high BP and GD. Thankfully this hasn't happened, but I am told that if he ever didn't "pass" they would do both of them on the same day to bump up his score.

I find the NST to be more comfortable than the BPP only because I get to sit up in a comfy bed and watch TV rather than lying on the u/s chair which kills my back, but both are easy and take less than 30 minutes most days.

  • I'm getting NSTs on one end of the week and ultrasounds on the other. I went today for an NST, was supposed to be a half hour hook-up... I fell asleep and maybe they forgot me. So an hour later...

  • I had an NST today when I went in with contractions. The baby buzzer scared Baby Camden so bad I felt his whole body jump! I was hooked up for about 20 minutes. I don't get them on a regular basis, it was just today.

  • I have twice-weekly NST's and BPP's every week. Like PP's said, the NST is just simple monitoring of your baby's heart rate, movement, and contractions if you're having any. They like to see a baseline heart rate and also good accelerations.

Your BPP is just a standard ultrasound where they measure fetal growth, check amniotic fluid levels, and watch for things like baby's heartbeat, breathing practices, and a couple of other things.

  • It sounds like the weekly ultrasounds that I'm doing already to check my fluid. I have low-normal fluid so they have been having me get weekly ultrasounds. Hmmm.
  • I get both the NST and BPP every week also. Now that my appointments moved to the morning time...he is usually sleeping and they have to use the "buzzer" to wake him up. :)
  • NSTs twice a week and US once a week to check fluids for GD. Also a growth US once in a while (for another complication) and a BPP the week before Memorial Day so that I only have to do one NST the following week. (NSTs are good for 3-4 days, BPPs are good for a week.) I'll be glad when all the monitoring is over!
