Glucose Test

So I'm going for my one hour GTT tomorrow, and it's at 10:00am. They told me I can eat whatever I wanted beforehand, as long as it wasn't anything sweet. So my question are, was the drink disgusting, and did it make you nauseous or anything after you had it? And if I ate something like a sausage biscuit from McDs about 30 min beforehand, do you think I would be fine? Thanks!

Re: Glucose Test

  • I've got my GD test tomorrow too; late in the afternoon.  Planning on trying to skip the sweets (soda, my liquid crack addiction).  Might just grab a burger and fries and have tea before I head in there.

Don't mean to thunderjack, but, I'm at week 25, and the doc's office graciously allowed me to piggyback off my usual appointment, although they've said it's a little bit early.  Anyone else been told that?  Everything I read (including the stuff my doc's office gave me) said that GD tests were done between weeks 24 and 28.  I can't figure out how I'm 'early' if I'm right in there.  Weird.  Anyone else been told they're 'early'?

  • Thanks, ladies! Yeah, I thought about instead of McDs, I could probably eat maybe 2 hard boiled eggs. I just want something that will keep me full and not make me feel like I'm gonna throw up during the test.

  • I do the lemon lime drink, it taste fine, nothing nasty at all. I was allowed to eat whatever I wanted. I had a bowl of cereal.

  • I just found out that I did not pass the 1 hour test. All I ate was a salad with lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes with vinegar and oil for lunch which was a couple hours before I went. I would avoid carbs and anything with sugar.

My drink was lemon lime, it tasted like really sweet, flat sprite. Good Luck!

  • I took my one hour this morning. I was told that if my test was in the morning I would eat breakfast very early, like 6am, but to stay away from sweets and carbs. I didn't want to get up that early, so all I had this morning was water. I had the lemon lime drink because I am allergic to orange dye, but it did have to call in advance to arrange that. It tasted like flat sprite. I felt fine after, but my OB appointment was during the hour wait and by the time they went to get LOs hb she was bouncing all over the place. For mine, the blood was taken after an hour and it is sent out. I should have the results in a couple of days.

  • I didn't eat before I took mine. I had the fruits punch drink. It doesn't taste bad but after about 20 min unwanted to throw up. I also don't know if this was from the drink or something else but I had the poops bad!!

  • I didn't fast for mine. My OB gave me a list of things to (or not to) eat before. I had eggs and a piece of ham and drank my lemon-line drink about 30 min later.

It did make me feel a bit nauseous (sugar in the morning does that to me) and very sluggish.

I just did mine today, so I haven't heard back yet.

  • I just did mine today. I had two hard boiled eggs before hand. The drink is sooo much smaller than I was imagining. Maybe less than 8 oz? Mine was the lemon lime flavor and I downed it in two gulps. It was really sweet, but not all that bad.

  • I didn't think the drink was too bad. I got the lemon-lime flavor and it tasted like a flat Sprite. It was not given to me cold, but it wasn't room temperature either so I could get it down pretty quickly. It didn't make me nauseous - there was just the unpleasantness of drinking something so sweet.

I ate eggs with turkey sausage and a bit of cheese and green salsa that morning. I agree that staying away from a bowl of cereal, biscuit/toast/muffin, or anything of that nature is a good idea! For reference's sake, I passed my test.

  • I failed my 1 hour, but not by much...just enough that I have to do the three hour. sigh. I do have to fast for the 3 hour, but I can drink water up until I get there and my nurse friend said to be sure to do that because it will help make sure I pass this time and don't have to do another 3 hour (I guess if you are borderline on the 3 hour, they change your diet and have you do the 3 hour again).

  • Had to quibble some when the lab pulled me back with my Doc's nurse who chastised me for being too early (week-wise) for my test.

"I called Tuesday and was told I could take it today."
"Let me just go check with the doctor."
*cue my HUGE and massive sigh*

I've got to wait about 7 days for my results.

Course, my doc at my appointment came in and told me he was glad I came in to test early, because there's some stuff happening which could signal GD, so better to know now than 4 weeks from now.  Meh.  So take THAT nursey-nurse!!!

Just got my results back.  The cut off for my doctor before having to take the 3 hour, is 130.  I was at 129.  Saved by a point!  LOL

I dont think it tastes bad, its having to drink it so fast that makes it hard to stomach.

My appt was in the middle of the day so I literally ate minutes before my drink. I had a bagel with cheese, lettuce, tomato and mustard plus some chips and my test was fine. The orange drink tastes like sunkist a little - not bad at all, just make sure it's cold.

My test was today; the fasting 2 hour one is what the midwives group I see uses. The phlebotomist had to watch me drink it...orange flavor. My arm is super bruised from 3 blood draws and I felt off all day due to crazy blood sugar issues. But hopefully I find out results soon (passing, I hope).
I ate 3 pieces of string cheese right after, then felt the worst on the drive to my office. I ended up going home a half hour early.

Juat found out I failed mine by one. Point. Ugh... 3 hr is Monday morning. Makes me wonder for those who have been diagnosed with GD, what their fail number was on the 1 hr test...
I second this question. I failed the one hour too and I'm looking for any evidence saying I will pass the 3 hour!

  • I ate scrambled eggs with a little shredded cheese and coffee (milk, no sugar) about 2 hours before taking the drink, made sure I was very well hydrated, and passed just fine this time.

Last pregnancy, I ate two pieces of whole wheat toast with peanut butter literally right before heading to the lab, and failed the 1 hour by a good 20 points if I remember correctly, I went on to pass the 3 hour. I'm so relieved I don't have to go through that headache again!

  • Uggghh.. got a 137, when passing was 140. They made me take the 3 hour today and I felt like throwing up and got real sick from it today. We will see what the results say....
  • I was told a light, low sugar breakfast was fine.

Last time no one told me anything and I forgot momentarily about the year and are a dozen mini Reese's. Oops

  • With both previous pregnancies, I failed the 1 hour test. IWith my first child, I passed the first hour of the 3 hour test by one point, then better for the other two.

With DS, I failed the first hour of the 3 hour test both times I had to take the 3 hour test, but passed the other two hours. My ob decided to call it borderline GD and told me to manage it with diet.
