fused placenta?

Anyone have experience with their twins having a fused placenta? Since we discovered we were having twins later (at 17 weeks) my OB isn't sure if they are mo/di or di/di with a placenta that has crowded and fused together. I go for my anatomy scan next week and I'm curious if they will be able to tell with that ultrasound since it's more high tech? They are treating me as mo/di to be safe but it'd be nice to know for sure during the pregnancy. TIA!

I had a fused placenta. They looked for a peak in it, which indicated the fuse. We didn't get the placenta examined after birth to see if it really was fused or not and I wish I had asked for it. I think my girls are id, but have to do testing. We had ultra sounds with MFM once a month and in ob office once a month (so we were seen by someone every other week). Other than that, we had no issues.

From what I remember, a triangular or peaked area at the dividing membrane is the main indication of fused placentas. With mo-dis the membrane is pretty much perpendicular to the placenta. Either way it's likely they will continue to treat your twins as mo-di.

I think I (we?) have a fused placenta right now.  At the last scan they only noted one anterior placenta on the report, so I am assuming that they have fused now.  The plan is to double-check at the next scan in a few weeks.  Our first u/s was at 6 weeks, and we have had about 6 so far, and they were very clearly di/di on the first 5 scans.

  • My boys are di/di and clearly fraternal. At my later u/s, there was always a very clear membrane (well I guess if they each had their own sac, it was really 2 membranes) between the two - there was a name that the tech always said but I don't remember it now. I doubt they'll be able to say for sure at this point.
