Recovering Supply After Stomach Virus

Does this board do intros? I hate feeling rude. If so: DD is 18 weeks today, EBF since birth, so blessed to have no issues. If anything, I have the world's biggest comfort nurser. She still nurses to sleep and don't tell MH but I actually like it. ;) I WFH full-time, DD is in daycare and I pump 3x during the day and typically once in the MOTN because I yield so much, then.

I had a stomach bug about 10 days ago and definitely noticed a dip in my pump sessions. I have been up to my normal tricks to get back to normal like potent MM tea (2 bags per 8oz of water, chugging it as iced tea), upped my water from 96oz to almost 200oz a day. Yesterday I was back on track with my daytime pumps (4-5oz) but today I'm back down around 3oz again. Is it too late in the game for the supply boost tricks to be helping me? Would anyone recommend power pumping? Or do I just need to keep trying to be patient? I have an ample freezer stash but I hate using it. (I know, I know. That's the point!) TIA!

Re: Recovering Supply After Stomach Virus

  • it is common for your supply to drop after the stomach flu, but i would think if it was 10 days ago it would have recovered by now.

it could just be that your supply is down-regulating a little now that you have been back to work a few weeks. your LO may be reverse-cycling- nursing more when you are home and taking slightly less milk during the day, and your supply may be adjusting to that.

have you checked your pump parts? if your membranes are worn out that can decrease your pumping output.

have you tried other galactagogues like oatmeal, brewer's yeast, or flaxseed? some people also find that calcium/magnesium supplements helps with their supply.

kellymom has a great, comprehensive article on pumping output.

  • Thanks @sctiger & @vvvvfee. :)

I just refreshed my tubing, valves, and membranes so I don't think pump parts are to blame. I've also been back to work for 10 weeks. I think DD was doing a bit of reverse cycling and also hitting the 4MW because she was waking to eat 1-2x overnight after weeks of STTN and then refusing some DC bottles. She seems to be back on track, now though. Hmmm.

I WFH now so I might just power pump once a day the rest of this week and see if that helps. I made lac cookies early on but realized, while they didn't really make me gassy, they made DD gassy! It wasn't until I stopped eating them that she stopped having awful man toots. Maybe I'll throw BY into a smoothie today and just see, though. I paid $17 for the canister of it at Whole Foods, may as well use it. Either way, thanks again. Now to convince myself to keep being patient. LO definitely isn't going hungry so I suppose I can't really complain.
