Apps for Ipad

DS has ASD and I wanted to ask if anybody can please direct me to find good apps for teeth brushing?

It has been utter hell with teeth brushing because all DS wants to do is bite on his tooth brush and he is capable of brushing the front teeth. We are still using toddler toothpaste and he is 5.

TIA

I think it is both partly because he doesn't want to do it and now I am wondering if he would be able to brush his top and bottom molars.

And maybe my expectations are too high.

    What is oral desensitizing?

Flouridated water sounds like an idea.

  • Are you using the toddler toothpaste because he won't spit it out? Our pediatric dentist has us just use a smear of fluoride toothpaste until they are able to spit it out. Once they can spit, it's okay to use more.

Sorry, I don't know of any apps.  We found a bunch of tooth brushing songs on iTunes that we used to play for the girls.
  • Thank you both!

I use toddler toothpaste because DS swallows it. I could start trying to smear the real stuff over his teeth and see what happens.

I think DH would have fun showing books with decaying teeth. He already teases DS about crabs eating his beloved turtles. DS is a turtle fan.

Has anyone done a Social Story?

LOL, when DS got resistant around toothbrushing, DH got out an old medical textbook and showed DS pictures of advanced dental decay and gum disease. Rather than deter DS, he became fascinated by them. I had to put the really grisly OB and Derm texts away for a couple years.
We do the above for boo-boo's - DD now goes right for my test and answer anatomy illustration test booklets. We go over the whole body - it may make the whole "where do babies come from" talk a lot easier, lol.

I know it's bad but I am blunt and say that if we don't brush our teeth then we could get cavities and have to go to the dentist for fillings. DD is not a fan of the dentist, haven't been yet - I did explain you can go and get checked or you can go and get a shot if you have a cavity; as to not instill fears of check-ups or "teeth counting."
  • DS has never been to the dentist. I am trying to avoid it as much as I can because I live in a small town and I doubt there are dentists that handle special needs around.

Heck, I don't even like the dentist.

I could try the shot idea.

Oh, sorry, I meant you put a smear of toothpaste on the toothbrush.  That way if he swallows it, it's just a small amount.

I don't want to sound judgmental or alarmist, but he needed to see a dentist at least 3 years ago.

ASD bring some issues that can make dental health/care especially challenging. You absolutely do not want his first experience to be one that leads to an out patient hospital procedure or a dentist reporting you to CPS for neglect.  Sometimes kids with ASD have very high tolerance for pain and can end up with things like abscesses without much warning. I know parents who reported for a first appointment at 3 not expecting anything amiss and got turfed to the hospital for root canals fillings and crowns.

If you can't find a SN dentist a pediatric or good-natured general dental practioner will be fine.We started with a dentist well before DS was dxd. We used to stop in for a visit just to get used to the staff and space.
The preschool has gotten the college dental program to come and check the entire school and I have always signed permission forms to get his teeth checked.

There was another instance the daycare DS attended 2 years ago had professionals come and do a teeth cleaning. I did sign consent forms and DS refused to open his mouth at that time.

This last experience was my reason to such a delay in seeing a dentist and I have a hard time going in there with DS's toothbrush to get the back and top teeth.

I am going to do research and see if there are dentists that have a good staff that can handle special needs.

  • Thank you all, again!

I did get DS some teeth brushing songs from youtube for kids. I even explained that his teeth get dirty when he eats food and he has to brush every single tooth.

I could go back to having him brush my teeth and I brush his. It worked and got him to open his mouth when he was younger.

How about a battery powered toothbrush? When my boys were toddlers this made them very cooperative for teeth brushing.
I did try this before and it was a cool lightning mcqueen battery powered toothbrush. DS got scared of it. I will try it when he is older.
