Introducing plates and bowls

We have a highchair that has a fold out so her sippy cup can be put in its place. Im terrified to even try to introduce bowls and plates at mealtimes! She does an amazing job of throwing food she doesnt care for as is. What if that the is followed by the bowl/ plate? How did you introduce the items? what is the appropriate age? do they make plates/bowls that bungy to the highchair?

We have the bowls that suction to the surface however she has MASTERED removing these and thats just with snack in it. I cant imagine a meal ive taken the time to prepare ending up on the floor :( Thoughts suggestions?

Re: Introducing plates and bowls

  • Either DH or I watch DD for signs of her picking up the plate and then say no and place our hand on the plate to make sure she understands it stays where it is.  So far so good.  I wouldn't turn my back on her right now though or else I'm sure the food would end up on the floor.  We do the same for when she throws her sippy cup on the floor.  When she actually places the sippy on the highchair tray instead of throwing it or dropping it on the floor we give tons of praise and do applause.  She's getting the message.

  • We also introduced plates around 1.  I had to physically hold the plate down every meal for about a week.  After that, he got used to the idea and left the plate alone.

They will throw it no matter what age you introduce it.  IMO it is much easier to introduce it really early and teach them not to throw it.

I use the suction plates...my 14month old can remove them easily as well but they provide resistance so the plate/bowl isn't sliding all over when using the spoon/form.

I have been using the utensils and plates since about 9/10 months.  If she plays with or throws the utensils they are gone for that meal.  The plates I just intercept if she tries to remove them.  They learn quickly. As others said if they throw the plate/bowl/food then they don't get it back.  I comment 'all done' or 'you must not be hungry' etc., to get the message across.

For the food throwing, sit close and intercept.  Use your hand to stop their hand.  I constantly say -food stay on the table, hands down, plate stay on the table etc etc.
