Progesterone Shots

After having my first child prematurely, my doctor has recommended weekly progesterone shots for weeks 18-36 during my second pregnancy as an attempt to avoid a repeat performance. I am beginning them on Monday. I have the option of getting them in office (my insurance company already shipped me the rx, as well as supplies for injections) or having my husband do them at home. As far as I understand, where the injection site is makes it very difficult to self administer. Does anyone have experience/advice for choosing one over the other (nurse vs. husband that is). The doctor's office is 10 minutes from my office, so 20 minutes round trip, weekly. Not a huge deal, but enough to give pause for thought.
Thanks in advance for any advice (or any head's up/food for thought re: the shots)

Re: Progesterone Shots

  • Would you have a co-pay at every appointment?
Do you have to take off work to go to the doctor?
Does your husband feel comfortable giving you the injections?

I know we would have a co-pay and that while my husband wouldn't feel comfortable giving the shots, my mom would. So I would choose at home but that's me. :)

My husband did them. We went to the doctors office for the first one and the nurse walked him through it. NBD.

  • We did it both ways. But going to the doctors is nice because if you have a question(s) you can sneak it at that visit. :-)
    I was notorious for that.
  • I chose to have my husband do them. Even if it was in a spot that I could give it to myself, I never would because I am afraid of needles. The first injection we went to the doctor's office and they trained my husband on how to do it. I would rather do it at home because you have to get it weekly and my doctor is about 25 minutes away. It was too much hassle and I didn't want to deal with it. Plus my insurance was going to make me pay a co-payment.

If you are comfortable with your husband doing it and he is comfortable I think that is the best option. Everyone is different though so this is honestly a choice where you have to decide what works best for you.

  • We did IVF so we had a million progesterone shots.

DH did them and I even got to the point of doing some myself. My DH was always comfortable to do it though. My tips are to warm the oil (I tucked it under a boob for awhile lol), dart that needle in FAST and HARD, and rub the site after the injection. The anticipation is way worse than the actual shot.

    Good luck :)
  • Nurse showed DH how to do it. At first, I was really worried he wouldn't be able to since he got really squeamish about putting in DS's feeding tube when he was a baby. However, he  was actually really good at it. Plus, doc was an hour away and I was on strict bedrest so this was really our only option.

As others had said it depends on your job and if you have a copay.  I have had friend's whose husbands have given it no problem.  My insurance (Atena HMO) covered sending a nurse to me (either at work or home). The nurse would do a quick check when she gave me the shot - she is the one who caught my early contractions and sent me to the hospital to have them stopped at 32 weeks.  For that reason I would say go in if it isn't to much of an inconvenience or cost.

  • No copay, thank goodness. My doctor's office bills the pregnancy in a "lump" sum-it just depends on what delivery method ends of happening. I went with the office visit today. Round trip it was just under 45 minutes and I got the added bonus of heart tones which are always awesome to hear. I am leaning towards trying a combo of both hubby and nurse because I don't think that it will always end up this smoothly!

If your H is comfortable doing it, I'd go that direction. I think it would be much more convenient. Going to the doctors office, you could have delays and end up spending a chunk of time there.

  • easy to do it at home.  We did IVF and we did a gazillion of progesterone shots at home.  They're not a big deal at all.  I even did a few myself when my husband was out of town.

My husband does mine and they're very easy that way.  My OB's office was going to set up home care visits for someone to do them (apparently they don't do them in the office, not sure why unless it's some kind of liability thing), but the pharmacy shipped me all the supplies and a nurse friend sent us a video walking us through intramuscular injections.  DH is pretty good at it, they really don't hurt at all.
