New Job Offer...

Hi ladies!!

I was offered a new job yesterday which is awesome! I was laid off from my last job the day that we confirmed our pregnancy. It was sad, but worked out due to me being really sick the first few months. My plan was to get a PT job at a retail store, but a head hunter reached out to me about this opportunity and they hired me. Problem is I did not tell them that I was pregnant. I wore a black dress and blazer during both interviews. Today I'm 19 weeks and know I'm going to pop more and more each day and at some point won't be able to conceal. I'm so confused and they want me to start tomorrow... Any advice??

Once they offer you the job and you accept then you should be able to tell them about being pregnant because it is illegal to not hire someone because your are pregnant.  They have already deemed that your skills are worthy of the job.

We have had several other women on this board in the same situation.  Hopefully they will share their experience with you.

Good luck and congrats on the job!

    Thanks @lrobi13‌
I do remember seeing some post a whoile ago, but didn't search them. Im considering telling them at the beginning of next week once I muster up the courage. Hopefully my scarves will hide the bump for the next couple of days...

  • Congratulations on the new job!!! :-bd

Like PP said, I wouldn't worry too much about your bump. They should not decline you a position just because you're pregnant, so based on the job itself, the pregnancy is pretty much irrelevant to the hiring process...especially since it's so early. Your employer will have plenty of notice for covering maternity leave.

I think you are fine!! You are early enough that you will be able to get a good amount of experience under your belt before you go out on leave. PP are right that they can't deny you the job just because you are preggers.

I may be in the same boat soon. I applied for a position and passed the phone screen and now they want me to come in for an interview! It's scheduled for next Thursday when I will be 21.5 weeks along. I'll try to hide the bump, but if they still offer me the position, I'll need to figure out if I want to work for them for 3 months and then go on leave for 3 months! Not a great start!!

  • They cannot terminate your employment if you're pregnant, but you will also not be entitled to any of the pregnancy protections (e.g., FMLA) that would secure time off beyond any accrued vacation or sick leave.  It might be worthwhile to disclose at this point in order to negotiate any leave you might need.

  • Thank you ladies for the great advice :)
I accepted the offer and will wear clothes like normal and if someone asks of me of I'm pregnant, I'm going to be honest.

I'm not eligible for benefits until after 90 days, which is fine since we have cobra coverage from previous employer.
