Socially Awkward (Advice?)

Okay, so I'm a teeny bit socially awkward. I mean, I'm friendly and people like me (I hope), but I'm just not super extroverted "I'm going to strike up a conversation with a stranger" kind of gal.

So, I work in a large office (about 150-200 people) made up of lots of different divisions (we're government and contractors). One of the divisions just took on an intern and she just happens to be sitting one door down and across the hallway from me and I found out (through their admin) she is also having twins (due one month before me in October).

Do I go over and introduce myself just because we're both having twins? I don't want to automatically assume she wants to talk to me because I'm having twins but then I don't want her to think I'm rude and don't want to say hi.

I mean, how would that even go?

Me: Hi, I hear you're having twins! I'm having twins too.
Her: OMG WE ARE LIKE BFFS FOREVER NOW HU? Uhh, hi!
Me: Ok. Well, bye. See ya in the bathroom!

I'm so overthinking this. Ugh. I HATE being socially awkward.

Im the same way, I totally understand! She would probably love it if you say hi, you guys have something big in common :) I am HORRIBLE at taking the initiative and starting conversations, I avoid it at all costs, except at work, where its kinda needed to get ahead!

I bet she'll love to know you're having twins too. And honestly, I bet you guys will really like having someone who understands what each of you are going through right now. I call it lucky that she's there. I attack other twin moms all the time. No one gets what we're going through like a MoM.
  • I totally struck up a conversation with another mom who had twins at my daughter's preschool pick up. I thought she would think I was crazy for talking to her because we'd never spoke but she was actually really excited to talk 'twins' and pregnancy. I'm glad I did it! One more person I can bounce ideas/worries/etc. off with. I say go for it!

OMG.  If someone in my organization were also pregnant with twins I would love to know.  One of the best conversations we have had with another mom so far was with a twin mom we bought our car seats from.   She talked our ear off, but it was SO nice to spend time with someone who has been there.

  • Walk over and say "Hi, I just wanted to come over and introduce myself, I'm _____.  I heard your pregnant with twins due in _______, I'm having twins as well in ________".  She'll either progress the conversation or not. If not just tell say "well have a great day, I'll see you later".
