Pool noodle bed rails (also posted in Crafty Moms)

Like title says I also posted this in Crafty Moms

I was just wondering if anyone had tried placing a pool noodle under the fitted sheet of their toddler's bed to act as a bed rail? We switched DD's crib to her day bed but had to put the crib side back up because she kept rolling out of bed. We recently moved and I can't find her rails that with her bed.

Trying to Conceive Ticker

Re: Pool noodle bed rails (also posted in Crafty Moms)

  • I tried when LO was small and learning to roll. We bedshare and I didn't want him to roll off the bed.

Didn't work for us because I have a very deep mattress, and even the sheets made for deep mattresses are a snug fit. No way I was fitting a pool noodle under there.

Plus it's a very "shallow" rail, so I think with a toddler, they could just roll right over it.

  • We did it when we switched her to a twin. She might have rolled over it once or twice, but I would say we were very happy with it, especially the cost! She probably used it a few months and then we retired it, she does fine without it now.

    Trying to Conceive Ticker
  • DS went from his toddler bed (6 inches off the ground) to a twin (2 and a half feet) this weekend.

We added a pool noodle today after he fell out last night. We will have to see!

  • We did this when we moved DS1 to a twin. It was more so that he could learn where the side of the bed was than an actual rail since he could roll over them. He has fallen out of bed 2 or 3 times, and now we don't need them at all. We also had to use towels wrapped around them (folded on half with the noodle in the fold and the rest of the towel toward the middle of the bed if that makes any sense) to keep them from sliding around under the sheets.

We decided to do that when we moved DS from his toddler bed to a full-size bed.  We still have a noodle under his sheet.  It works fine, but it just moves around a bit.  You just have to adjust it every now and again.

They use that trick for adults in nursing homes a lot since actual rails are a restraint and it's cheaper than a scoop mattress. It seems to work well for the adults

  • He didn't fall out last night!

Well he did, but he jumped out, thudded on the floor, and yelled he fell out and needed two more stories before he fell asleep. He didn't know I saw him.
