Rotating milk?

I apologize because I know this has been discussed before and I'm really just too stressed/lazy to search for it all.

I have a freezer stash of about 25 oz. Daycare requires you to send prepared bottles (so, not the bags). I've been able to pump enough for each day so I haven't had to use the freezer stash yet. I'm thinking I'll start sending 1 bottle with thawed milk each day and the rest new milk that wasn't frozen and then I'll freeze the equivalent amount of new milk. Does that make sense? Better suggestions?

Re: Rotating milk?

  • Yeah. You definitively want to be rotating it out. Are you making just enough? Or freezing a little?

If you are making just enough, is probably just use the 25 oz for a few date night or something. Assuming you have time before it expires. But if you aren't freezing any new milk, then there is really no point to thaw the same amount you are freezing each day. I'd just find another use for that milk.

But regardless of what you do, you should use it before it expires of donate it.

I freeze Friday's pumped milk and pull out the oldest milk to feed on Monday.  This gradually rotates through a freezer stash so none gets too old.  Alternatively, if you have a large stash or want to turn it over all at once, you could do as you said and thaw one bag per day (and freeze the same amount of milk) until it's all refreshed.

  • I second what @kimbo1216 said.

I take enough milk for the week, so I take frozen stuff on Monday mornings. I rotate my stock, so right now DS is getting milk that I pumped 2 weeks ago.

I've only had to pump all day for a week and started out with some supply issues but it looks like I'm back on track and I'm able to freeze a bit.

I'm realizing there's no real point to a freezer stash but like knowing that if I have a supply dip, get stuck in traffic, have a date night, it won't be a problem.

  • I have a pretty large stash and use about half fresh/half frozen each day to make sure i'm rotating through the old stuff as much as possible

This - I have about two month's worth of frozen stashed, but I also BF when at home and use fresh milk to make oatmeal.

@ncase2 2 months? That's like 1500 oz or something! Donate some of that stuff, seriously. @redzee you wouldn't think you need it, but 25 oz is a comfort buffer. What if you go to the ER for hours, have to undergo anesthesia and pump and dump, or go to a dying relative? I mean, formula isn't the end of the world by any means, but I take some comfort in having a bit of a freezer stash.

We use frozen milk the first day, use fresh the next 2days,and freeze what I pump the last day. I'm not gaining any now but like you have a little stash.
  • LO gets frozen on Monday and fresh the rest of the week. Fridays pumped milk gets frozen.

I plan to - I also have about 75 oz of frozen milk that I can't give DS because it has dairy protein in it. My local breastmilk bank won't take anything less than 200 oz, so I am trying to decide when I will donate - I want to make it to a year.

  • I pump somewhere between just enough & enough for an extra bottle. Every day I freeze what I pump & take out frozen milk for the next day.

Because I used to pump once a day before I went back to work, I had a decent stash. Now I am always using frozen milk that's about 2 mo old.
