Baby Names

Best Nicknames and/or Shortenings

I'm putting the best nicknames/shortenings next to some of my favorite names and I am curious if you agree:

Boys:
Vincent -- Vince, followed by Vinny
James -- Jim, Jimmy, and Jay in that order
Jason -- Jase, followed by Jay
Michael -- Don't like any.  The full name is much too beautiful on its own to be butchered to Mike, Mikey, or Mickey!
Carmine -- Carm, Carminello, Carminuccio
Gianluca -- Gianni
John -- Jack
Anthony -- Tony
Edward -- Eddie, followed by Ed
Robert -- Bobby, followed by Rob
Rory -- Ror
William -- Bill, Billy, Will, and Willy in that order

Girls:
Felicia -- Licia, Leeshee, and Fleesh in that order
Victoria -- Vicki/Vicky, Vick
Isabella -- Isa, Bells, and Izzy in that order
Heather -- Heath
Alison -- Ali
Mikaela -- Mik and "My Mikaela" (I know a family who calls their daughter/granddaughter that as a form of affection sometimes and I think it's adorable)
Ariel -- Arielly
Molly -- Moll
Ashlyn -- Ash
Brittany/Britney -- Britt/Brit and Britt-Britt/Brit-Brit in that order
Kaylan -- Kay
Luisa -- Lu and Lulu in that order
Maria -- Marita (LOVE!)
Rosalia -- Ro and Ro-Ro in that order
Gina -- G
Ava -- Ave
Rosaria -- Ro and Ro-Ro in that order
Madeline -- None.  Madeline is too beautiful to be shortened.
Rhianna -- Rhi
Gia -- G
Cristina -- Crissy and Cristy/Cristi in that order
Jamie -- Jame, Jay

Re: Best Nicknames and/or Shortenings

  • The only ones I really like are Luisa/Lu and Isabella/Isa

  • I totally forgot I like Johnny as a nickname for John and Liam as a nickname for William!  Oops!!  :0
  • This is a really weird post.

So many of those names have no need for a nick name. Gia was just too much, so she needs to be "G"? Really?

    Heath for Heather?

    Arielly for Ariel?

Is this one of those "We dare you" posts where another board dares you to come here and post something ridiculous?

I called the topic nicknames and/or shortenings.  Some of them are just nicknames or shortenings for affection only that I've heard (such as G, Heath, and Arielly) and I find them endearing.

    Boys:
Vincent -- Vince, followed by Vinny- Vince is nice.  Vinny is very goombah to me (I have several Vinnys in my fam)
James -- Jim, Jimmy, and Jay in that order.  Dislike all NNs for James with the exception of Jamie maybe
Jason -- Jase, followed by Jay- much prefer Jay
Michael -- Don't like any.  The full name is much too beautiful on its own to be butchered to Mike, Mikey, or Mickey! I love Mick and Mack
Carmine -- Carm, Carminello, Carminuccio - don't think this name lends itself to a NN
    Gianluca -- Gianni- Nice
    John -- Jack- Nice
Anthony -- Tony- Hate Tony.  prefer the full name
Edward -- Eddie, followed by Ed- Love Eddie and Teddy
Robert -- Bobby, followed by Rob- Love Bobby
Rory -- Ror- no NN needed
William -- Bill, Billy, Will, and Willy in that order Like Will

    Girls:
Felicia -- Licia, Leeshee, and Fleesh in that order Dislike all
Victoria -- Vicki/Vicky, Vick- none.  I do like Tori
Isabella -- Isa, Bells, and Izzy in that order Love Isa
    Heather -- Heath- NO
    Alison -- Ali- Just OK
Mikaela -- Mik and "My Mikaela" (I know a family who calls their daughter/granddaughter that as a form of affection sometimes and I think it's adorable) Please spell it Michaela.  I like Micky as a NN for this name
    Ariel -- Arielly- NO
Molly -- Moll- Molly already is a NN, so NO
    Ashlyn -- Ash - dislike
Brittany/Britney -- Britt/Brit and Britt-Britt/Brit-Brit in that order Dislike all
    Kaylan -- Kay- Dislike
Luisa -- Lu and Lulu in that order- Both are cute
Maria -- Marita (LOVE!)- Never heard this?
Rosalia -- Ro and Ro-Ro in that order- Cute, but like Rosa as a NN
    Gina -- G- Just OK
    Ava -- Ave- NO
Rosaria -- Ro and Ro-Ro in that order- Prefer Rosie
Madeline -- None.  Madeline is too beautiful to be shortened. Agree
    Rhianna -- Rhi- NO
    Gia -- G- NO
Cristina -- Crissy and Cristy/Cristi in that order.  Dislike both.  Love Cricket as a nn
Jamie -- Jame, Jay dislike both

As a Heather, I am assuming she means the first syllable of the name Heather, and not the boy's name Heath.

FTR-- I hate being called "Heathe"

  • I'm also a Heather. I don't mind it in conversation from people that know me well, but that's about it... I don't advertise it as a nn.
